He served on the committees concerning tillage 13 Dec. 1597 lewd & wandering persons 20 Dec. costs in civil lawsuits 27 Jan. 1598 & on two conferences with the Lords 16 Jan. on defence and 3 Feb. on wine casks. He was probably the 'Mr. George Cooke' who was appointed to the committee on tellers and receivers on 12 Dec. Croke began reporting law cases in 1581& is mentioned as an advocate in his own reports in 1588. He established a lucrative practice & built up estates in Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire. He was associated with the Hampden family was named as overseer in the will of William Hampden & must have known John Hampden for whom he later gave judgment in the ship-money case. Croke's marriage 'fell out unexpected to his friends that conceived a purpose in him never to have married' she being some 20 years of age & he 'an ancient bachelor'. Croke's law reports published after his death in a translation from the law French by Harbottle Grimston his son-in-law soon occupied a considerable place in the authoritative literature of the common law. The 12 active years which he spent on the King's bench coincided with some of the great constitutional cases of the century. He is best remembered in connexion with ship-money. In 1637 Charles submitted the question to the judges all of whom-save for Croke and Sir Richard Hutton-agreed that the King could demand such financial aid from his subjects in time of danger. The two dissidents signed this general statement in the belief that they were bound to yield to the majority opinion. However when the problem came before him judicially in the Hampden case he made an outright statement declaring that there was no precedent for such a prosecution and that only Parliament might set a charge upon a subject. 'The King has ship money by hook but not by Croke' said the wits. In 1641 Croke retired retaining the title salary & allowances of a judge. He died at Waterstock 16 Feb. 1642 leaving two wills the first being concerned with the disposal of land to his wife and son Thomas. In the second made 1640 and proved 3 May 1642 he asked to be buried without 'heraldry' hearse or any 'unnecessary ceremonies'. The widow was appointed sole executrix.--historyofparliamentonline ; Sir Harbottle Grimston 1603-1685 English politician second son of Sir Harbottle Grimston Bart. d. 1648 was born at Bradfield Hall near Manningtree on the 27th of January 1603. Educated at Emmanuel College Cambridge he became a barrister of Lincoln's Inn then recorder of Harwich & recorder of Colchester. As member for Colchester Grimston sat in the Short Parliament of 1640 & he represented the same borough during the Long Parliament speedily becoming a leading member of the popular party. He attacked Archbishop Laud with great vigour; was a member of the important committees of the parliament including the one appointed in consequence of the attempted seizure of the five members; & became deputy-lieutenant of Essex after the passing of the militia ordinance in January 1642. He disliked taking up arms against the king but remained nominally an adherent of the parliamentary party during the Civil War. In the words of Clarendon he "continued rather than concurred with them." .He translated the law reports of his father-in-law the judge Sir George Croke 1560-1642 which were written in Norman-French & five editions of this work have appeared.-1911 Britannica ; thick volume; marginalia; FAIR Printed by and for John Field and Tho. Do Tali' the remarkable two storied cave complex from Plans of Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora. This plate was engraved by Thomas Daniell after a drawing by James Wales in 1803 and is from the part of Oriental Scenery known as "Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora near Aurangabad". The huge complex of cave temples was actually begun by Buddhists in the 6th century eventually including Hindo and Jain temples as well. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies sketches and drawings of the scenery architecture and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture landscaping and interior decoration arose with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. The sixth part of Oriental Scenery is twenty-four plates based on drawings by James Wales primarily of the excavations at Ellora. The title of this section was Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora near Aurungabad in Decan. The mountain contains 34 "caves" that were created to serve as monasteries and temples for Buddhists Hindus and Jains each religion having several spaces. Do Tal here called Dotali was one of the Buddhist "caves". It is three stories high and was built in the 8th century. 20614On elaborate engraved letterhead of the South Wales Daily Post 211 High Street Swansea. 12 May 1921. 3pp. 8vo. Autograph postscript of nine lines on otherwise-blank reverse of second leaf. On aged and worn paper with holing to one corner from stud which attached the leaves together. He was pleased to hear from Mansel and understands from his letter that 'notwithstanding your disabilities you manage to put in a deal of work'. He continues: 'I shall be particularly interested in your plays which are more in my line than music. He quotes Mansel's 'notes on the print of my hand' which he finds 'particularly interesting in view of the fact that they were made more than 11 years ago'. The notes predict 'great misfortune danger between the ages of 40-45 perhaps illness connected with the heart'. He recalls that in 1898 when 'crossing from New York to Liverpool two or three American ladies who affected a knowledge of palmistry regarding which I was a pronounced sceptic made practically the same prediction of a great trouble â€œworse than deathâ€ one of them said which would probably overtake me before I reached 50 years of age'. He 'reached 50 years without serious trouble or illness of any account had heart trouble in 1914 which was practically cured by a sea voyage. In 1917 I suffered the great nervous collapse which for months made life a blank to me.' On the question of 'the other notes' he feels that 'when lines are read by a friend there is a predisposition to flatter'. He would like to spend a weekend with Mansel but his diary is full in the period preceding a planned 'holiday to St. Malo'. The postscript concerns the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
