Small format album 6 x 5 inches containing 27 gelatin silver print photographs approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches each mounted across 58 pages accompanied by four handwritten inscriptions from friends and an ownership inscription reading "To Maggie with Love & Best wishes for a Merry Xmas." The photographs depict identifiable locations in Galloway including Threave Castle Loch Ken Loch Dee Bridge of Dee Dundrennan Abbey and Carlingwark Loch as well as a coastal view identified as Llandudno. Scenes include agricultural labor such as "Sheep Washing" showing workers managing livestock at a riverside and "Salmon Netting" depicting eight laborers resting while working a fast-moving river. Many photographs are captioned in ink with titles such as "A Galloway Moor" "Raider's Brig." and "Raider's Land." The album also includes portraits of family members and reflects experimentation in photographic printing with variation in tonal quality and technique across images.<br /> <br /> The album documents a period in which rural regions of Scotland retained agricultural and village-based labor structures while increasingly being recorded through amateur photography. The inclusion of inscriptions featuring poetic reflections on friendship and life-such as "All life is a school a preparation a purpose."-indicates the album's dual function as both visual record and social keepsake. The combination of landscape labor and portraiture situates the compiler within a network of observation and personal memory-making during the early twentieth century.
