000120
Arabic manuscript: a commentary on Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam by Ibn Ê¿ArabÄ«.

Approximately 500 pages ruled in silver with an illuminated heading on the opening page. Written in a fine naskh script by Muḥammad ZihnÄ« dating to the late 10th century AH or the early 11th century AH. Preserved in a contemporary full-leather Ottoman-style binding with flap.

The author Shaykh BÄlÄ« Efendi of Sofia d. 1553 was born in Strumica in present-day North Macedonia. According to Evliya Çelebi Seyahatname Book III he belonged to a Yörük tribe and claimed descent from the family of the Prophet; at least one of these claims is highly doubtful. After completing his studies he entered the service of QÄsim Efendi shaykh of the Ê¿AlÄ« PaÅŸa tekke in Istanbul.

At the urging of his murshid and following a dream in which Ibn Ê¿ArabÄ« himself requested that he compose a commentary on Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam BÄlÄ« Efendi wrote his most important work Sharḥ al-Fuṣūṣ. After serving for a period as shaykh of the Zeyrek dervish convent in Istanbul he relocated to Sofia where he later died. He played a significant role in the spread of the Khalwatiyya order in the Balkans.
hardcover
