18680012009Macao Macau China Havana Cuba: Chinese Coolie Ship Manifest. Fair with no dust jacket. 1868. Non-Book. On offer is a tremendous San Salvadorian ship manifest recording the names and information of 622 Chinese men who were transported from the port of Macau to Havana Cuba to complete their indentured servitude as coolies working for Cuban sugar plantation owners. This manifest is for the January 25 1868 sailing of the Peruvian Galley the America. This sailing was captained by Cpt Ferreiro for the Compania Maritima del Peru. This sailing was under the San Salvadorian flag. The ship arrived in Macau on May 20 1868. 610 coolies departed Macau and 607 arrived in Cuba. This manifest was signed on January 241868 by Henrique W. Pearce a Macao-based emigration agent. It was also signed the day before departure on January 241868 by The Consul General of His Majesty José de Alguilar. The America had previously been used as a coolie ship called Red Rose under the British flag and under the Italian flag as the America. The America completed a total of seven coolie voyages transporting a total of 4703 Chinese passengers. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847-1874. Throughout this period African slavery was slowly being abolished around the world. The coolie trade was initiated by Britain and was eventually dominated by both Britain and the United States of America. Chinese coolie laborers were sent to work in British American and Spanish colonies and the nature of the trade changed throughout its 27-year operation due to social and political pressures. The coolie trade took place in large part between the shipping port in Macao now a part of China then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba then under Spanish control. As Macau was under Portugese rule at the time of the coolie trade they transported coolies on their vessels frequently and many of the manifests were written in Portuguese and/or Spanish. It contains 18 pages of writing 9 front and back over 10 physical pages. Folded together. Significant bending with some tears at the crease lines. This new edition of the main event for the promotion exchange and debate of contemporary graphic art held in Peru has managed to summon artists groups and workshops national and foreign under the curatorial theme "Transfer: Departures and Returns from the Graphic Arts". Spanning from the more traditional forms of engraving to the more contemporary digital expressions the Biennale featured twenty exhibitions in 17 art galleries and parallel activities such as interventions conferences and workshops. Participating institutions included Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima Municipalidad de Miraflores Caja Metropolitana de Lima Escuela Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores Universidad Ricardo Palma Alianza Francesa and the Centro Cultural de España. "We start with a very specific objective for this version of the biennial space not only promotion exchange and debate from the contemporary graphics highlighting their creative validity its contribution to history art criticism and education. Moreover even more in an environment like ours the Peruvian where engraving culture in many cases excluded. Therefore this needs to establish a multiple route linked with memory and is part of the essence of the engraving. Therefore the intent fits the subject of transference in which concept we discover the departures and returns the movement that generates a change good or bad but never the same. In this amount of trajectories routes and paths in our history as a country or as individuals we always collect something and leave something else. And in such situations the inherent creativity of expressing it into our worlds and languages. William M. Ivins Jr. curator of MOMA in his early years argued in his text "Printed Image and Knowledge: Analysis of Pre-Photographic Image" that the maturity of a society can be expressed in terms of graphical development as means of communication and social information." Incisione in rame su doppio foglio (cm.50x57 circa) con bellissima colorazione coeva, verso velato da finissimo foglio di carta Giappone. Bella e rara carta nautica, tratta dal celebre atlante di De Witt ''Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas", che copre le coste dell'America Centrale, Perù, Cile, Jamaica e parte di Cuba e Porto Rico. . Le indicazioni toponimiche e le caratteristiche geografiche sono strettamente limitate alle coste. Rosa dei venti, linee lossodromiche e splendido cartiglio, in basso a destra, con titolo in latino, con ricche decorazioni colorate raffiguranti varie figure, anche allegoriche. "Frederick de Wit deve essere considerato uno dei più importanti editori di mappe della seconda metà del XVII secolo. La maggior parte delle sue mappe sono di ottima qualità, sono caratterizzate da un'incisione chiara e bella, dall'attualità e ricchezza dell'immagine cartografica nonché dall'equilibrio delle decorazioni cartografiche". A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author travelled extensively in Peru to research her novel and provided a detailed picture of Peru at the time with references to its history.
