Quite nice map of these half dozen South American countries from the 1864 edition of "Mitchell's New General Atlas Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World Plans of Cities Etc." Upper third contains "Map of New Granada Venezuela and Guiana" lower left third contains "Map of Peru and Equador" and lower right third contains "Map of the Argentine Confederation." This annual message of the President contains the first Congressional printing of two treaties. The first the Webster-Ashburton Treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain settled the difficult boundary dispute in the Northeast and enlisted American support in the British effort to suppress the slave trade. It is one of the major 19th century American treaties and it is printed here along with much of the correspondence between Secretary of State Daniel Webster Lord Ashburton and others. There is also much information on the destruction of the steamer Caroline an incident which did serious harm to U.S.-British relations.
