1842WRCAM35397Washington 1842. 174pp. Dbd. Circular ink stamp on one internal page scattered light foxing else very good. This annual message of the President contains the first Congressional printing of two treaties. The first the Webster-Ashburton Treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain settled the difficult boundary dispute in the Northeast and enlisted American support in the British effort to suppress the slave trade. It is one of the major 19th century American treaties and it is printed here along with much of the correspondence between Secretary of State Daniel Webster Lord Ashburton and others. There is also much information on the destruction of the steamer Caroline an incident which did serious harm to U.S.-British relations. The second treaty is the first U.S. treaty with Ecuador a treaty of amity and commerce. MALLOY pp.650 421. unknown books
