Borda de Moraes I, p. 281. Chadenat n° 71. Leclerc, n° 587

"Historiography has quite neglected the romantic and fascinating history of the underground and free-professing Jews in colonial Brazil, who formed the earliest Jewish community in America and became the "Jewish Pilgrim Fathers" of New York, as well as of Jamaica, Barbados, and other Jewish communities in the Caribbean area. The present work is an effort to fill this gap." - Preface. Wiznitzer was president of the Brazilian Jewish Institute of Historical Research and a frequent contributor to learned journals.
