An interesting narrative based on many years of travels in all parts of Brazil , including the gold districts of Minas Gerais, and through Bahia and MaranhÒo, with some emphasis on the geography, productions, economy, people, customs, food, etc. There are detailed appendices on surveys the author undertook, climate, gold and diamond mining in Brazil, railways, sugar factories, economic prospects, physical geography, with detailed statistical tables. The many illustrations are mostly from drawings, a few are photo-engravings.

Goodman 642: 'The work of an American naturalist, who explored most of the major regions of Brazil between 1868 and 1874; he was attracted by the great variety of flora and fauna in that country.' Smith first came to Brazil as part of the Morgan expedition in 1870 and returned in 1874. He had a keen insight into the local political and economic conditions. This classic travel description is much sought after. A London edition was published later the same year. It gives a very detailed account, including much on the rivers, natural history, agriculture and the Indians. The appendix is on the geology and physical geography of the Amazons Valley.

Great colour illustration by artist Jorge Veloso features black man with cigarette and coffee playing acoustic guitar in coffee shop with high-rise office buildings and business people in background. Illustration measures 17.6" x 17.8". Average wear. Slight bit of loss to lower left corner. Pin holes at each corner and halfway down each side. Background colour may have originally been brown but appears to have mostly faded to pale green. A lovely memento of Canadian Airlines and its Sao Paulo service. A scarce account not listed in most references on the region.
