Deux forts in-8 de 245 x 165 mm pour (xxxviii) 460 + 506 pp. Reliés demi-cuir, dos à 5 nerfs soulignés doré, nom d'auteur et titre en doré, tomaison (I, II) en chiffres romains dorés et seconde tomaison (4, 5) en chiffres indiens dorés. Plats et gardes marbrés. Dos, chasses et plats frottés, rousseurs marginales qui n'empêchent pas la lecture. Papier sable clair. Le premier volume contient une préface et 1759 paragraphes répartis en 15 lectures, le second volume les paragraphes 1760 à 2634 dans les lectures 16 à 26, où 63 documents sont analysés, ainsi de 4 pièces justificatives en annexe. Fourni et détaillé, ce livre a demandé plusieurs décennies de travail à son auteur. Il retrace l'histoire de la frontière commune entre la France et le Brésil, frontière correspondant au fleuve Oyapock depuis le traité d'Utrecht de 1713. Pendant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, un gouvernement français penchant vers l'aventurisme a songé à annexer les terres du sud de l'Oyapock, ce qui motiva plusieurs Brésiliens érudits à défendre les intérêts de leur pays. Sans chauvinisme, Joachim Caetano da Silva se passionna pour la cause qu'on n'appelait pas encore le "contesté franco-brésilien" et commença ses recherches en France. Il lut ses premiers résultats devant la Société de Géographie de Paris en 1860. Sa mort en 1873 n'acheva pas son œuvre. Le livre fut réédité, enrichi notamment d'un long sommaire, et c'est la troisième édition proposée ici qui fut donnée le 4 avril 1899 par le baron Rio-Branco, représentant du Brésil, au Conseil fédéral suisse chargé de statuer sur le contesté. Les arbitres donneront raison au Brésil et la frontière de Guyane restera sur l'Oyapock où elle se trouve toujours aujourd'hui.

In folio (58,5x50 cm). Esemplare in fine coloritura coeva ed in ottime condizioni di conservazione. Magnifica e vivida tiratura di questa celeberrima carta del territorio di del Portogallo e delle colonie brasiliane. La carta fu stampata dal successore e cognato del grande cartografo Matthaus Seutter (sposò una delle figlie di Seutter), il cartografo, editore ed incisore Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717 - 1777). Lotter, si formò alla bottega di Matthaus Seutter per il quale lavorò. Alla morte di Seutter ne rilevò l’attività che portò avanti fino al 1777 anno della sua morte. L’attività passo poi al figlio, Matthias Albrecht Lotter. Tobias Conrad fu uno dei più apprezzati cartografi del settecento. La carta riproduce il territorio di Gibilterra con la rocca. Un bel cartiglio animato, collocato al margine alto sinistro della carta, descrive il contenuto della mappa. Nel margine basso un cartiglio con legenda della carta e la mappa dei possedimenti coloniali portoghesi in Brasile. La carta venne incisa da Georg. Friderich Lotter nel 1762. Opera in bella tiratura ed in ottime condizioni di conservazione.

"Here is a story of people struggling for happiness with a background of international intrigue and inevitable conflict in which these United States of America shed some of their blood to liberate an enslaved nation." According to the dust jacket this is the author's first novel and also the first book published by Pathfinder Enterprises. Brazil is described as an Oakland taxi-cab driver: "most of it was actually written in a taxi-cab." The jacket flaps gives an intriguing list of characters see image and describes the novel as such: "This is the story of two girls. One of them was good and the other was bad—yet they were very much alike. It is a story that pleads for tolerance. ." We do note a happy romantic ending for one of the girls.
