Ouvrage destiné à remettre en lumiére un des épisodes les plus curieux et les plus ignorés de l'histoire de la colonisation française. L'auteur cherche à démontrer que les Français (Jean Cousin, Gonneville, etc.) découvrirent le Brésil avant les Portugais, et qu'ils négociérent avec les tribus pendant toute la premiére moitié du XVIe s. En 1555 Durand de Villegaignon fonde une véritable colonie dans la baie de Ganabàra non loin de l'emplacement de la future capitale Rio de Janeiro. Cet établissement est d'abord trés prospère, mais les colons se laissent gagner par les fureurs religieuses qui sévissaient en Europe. Villegaignon abandonne l'Amérique et son successeur, Bois le Comte, n'étant plus à la hauteur de la situation, les Portugais profitent alors pour s'unir aux Brésiliens et expulser définitivement les Français. Dans la seconde partie on trouve des piéces justificatives : la protestation du baron de St-Blancard contre la capture de la Pélerine, 2 lettres de N. Besides the narrative of his travels to Brazil, the author describes his stay in Argentina, Buenos Aires, travels along the Parana, gauchos, etc. The author was an early tourist to the region, where most travel was either scientific or business. A scarce account not listed in most references on the region.
