A clean, unmarked book with a tight binding. 204 pages. Pictorial covers. Text in French; many color and b&w photographs. Book for the exhibition presented at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, 14 May through 12 October, 2003. Slight scuffing and edge wear to cover.
12mo [18.5 x 12.5 cm]; viii, 242, 32 [publisher's ads dated July 1887] pp, frontis map with tissue guard, many illustrations from author's drwgs including title page vignette, index. original blue pictorial cloth, gilt spine title lettering, corner & spine end wear, small label removed from spine, minor foxing on few leaves, rear cover with light stains, name on title margin, good or better copy. A picture of this book is available up Borba de Moraes I p. 284: 'The author visited Rio, Santos, and Sao Paulo. His impressions are very picturesque and accurate.' Besides the narrative of his travels to Brazil, the author describes his stay in Argentina, Buenos Aires, travels along the Parana, gauchos, etc. The author was an early tourist to the region, where most travel was either scientific or business. A scarce account not listed in most references on the region.
