Goodman 642: 'The work of an American naturalist, who explored most of the major regions of Brazil between 1868 and 1874; he was attracted by the great variety of flora and fauna in that country.' Smith first came to Brazil as part of the Morgan expedition in 1870 and returned in 1874. He had a keen insight into the local political and economic conditions. This classic travel description is much sought after. A London edition was published later the same year. It gives a very detailed account, including much on the rivers, natural history, agriculture and the Indians. The appendix is on the geology and physical geography of the Amazons Valley.
