Timbretto di dono dell'Accademia Nacional de la Historia di Caracas. Antica firma d'appartenenza al margine alto del frontespizio. Una piccolo strappetto nel margine alto del frontespizio, senza perdita di carta e per il resto, nel complesso, esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione, in questa versione, di questo celebre viaggio “immaginario” o meglio ancora “immaginato”, opera del rappresentante del governo francese in Venezuela, Francisco Depons Depons. L'autore nacque in Francia nel 1751. Dal marzo 1801 al luglio 1804 risiedette in Venezuela, come rappresentante del governo francese. In quei tre anni e pochi mesi ebbe il compito di informare la Francia sulle condizioni politiche, economiche, geografiche e sociali del nostro Paese. I rapporti raccolti da Depons sarebbero poi serviti come base per il suo libro intitolato “Viaggio nella parte orientale di Tierra Firme in Sud America”, pubblicato a Parigi nel 1806. Il libro descrive le province di Caracas, Maracaibo, Barinas, Guayana, Cumaná e l'isola di Margarita durante i primi anni del XIX secolo. Come scrive lo stesso autore: “Sin la ley que me impuse de someterlo todo al informe de mis propios ojos, mis vigilias, fatigas y gastos me hubieran conducido a resultados más perjudiciales que útiles a la geografía y a la historia (…). Es preciso que el orden que se les dé [a los materiales de su descripción] sea tal que hagan en el espíritu de mis lectores las mismas impresiones que recibió el mío recorriendo y estudiando la parte oriental de la Tierra-firme”. In realtà, in buona parte Depons, compose un racconto immaginario, seppur con puntiglio e precisione, smentì anche viaggiatori antecedenti che avevano realmente visitato quei luoghi. Come conseguenza delle notizie e delle descrizioni precise, nuove e moderne sull'America, Depons viene nominato nel 1807 membro della Società Accademica delle Scienze di Parigi. Anni dopo, nel 1812, morì in Francia, luogo da cui non sarebbe mai più partito dopo il suo ritorno dal Venezuela nel 1804. Quindici anni dopo la morte di Depons, nel 1827, il colpo di scena. Felipe Bauzá, il grande geografo e cartografo spagnolo, consulta il Andrés Bello sull'origine della notizia che il fiume Orinoco e la Guayana che si possono trovare nel testo di Depons. Andrés Bello, grande viaggiatore, risponde senza mezzi termini: "Posso assicurarvi che sono assolutamente certo, che Depons non ha visto il continente orientale, cioè le province che costituivano il Capitanato Generale del Venezuela, più del brevissimo spazio tra La Guaira e Puerto Cabello che anche da questo spazio vide lungo la strada solo le principali città: La Guaira, Caracas, Valencia, Puerto Cabello e le valli dell'Aragua; e che la sua residenza quasi costante era a Caracas, dove lo incontravo e lo curavo”. In poche parole Depons scrisse, in buona parte, una precisa e minuziosa descrizione “fantasiosa” del territorio venezuelano senza che ancora in vita, alcuno dimostrò la fantasia delle sue descrizioni.
