The first Paris edition of the constitution of the republic of Gran Colombia following the first Spanish edition printed in Caracas the same year. In 1822 French and Dutch editions were also published in Philadelphia and Amsterdam respectively. The formation of the new republic which included Venezuela New Granada and Quito was followed abroad with much interest and the new government also wished to secure international support. This French edition includes a letter by the republic's envoy to foreign governments requesting diplomatic recognition. The constitution decentralized power vesting it in the states which then proceeded to snipe at one another; eventually civil war broke out. In 1842/3 a peace was achieved and in 1843 a new constitution with centralized power was promulgated. One of at least three "official editions" of the Colombian constitution printed in Bogota in 1886 all with different paginations. The constitution was completed August 41886 and approved by the delegates and the national executive committee the following day.
