Some browning to title else clean and very good. <br /> <br /> Very scarce house document which includes the report of two important surveys by Theodorick Bland 1776-1846 on Chile and Argentina. Bland was selected by President Monroe for a special diplomatic mission the South American Commission of 1817-1818. Several in the commission provided reports but most were strictly concerned with political military and commercial matters. Prima edizione italiana First Italian Edition. <em>Sergio Larrain ha visitato Londra nel 1958: di fronte a lui una città saldamente ancorata alle sue tradizioni di divisione di classe ancora percepibili in ogni luogo. Tuttavia pronti ad affiorare c'erano anche i segnali di una società in evoluzione. Nelle sue strade nei suoi parchi nei suoi club e cafè Larrain testimonia una città" in movimento verso un nuovo decennioo. Mai piubblicate prima queste eloquenti fotografie sono il ritratto vivido e presente di una Londra scomparsa ormai da tempo.<br /><br />"L'atmosfera sia come la intendeva Brandt sia intesa in senso metereologico è"; palpabile nelle fotografie di Larrain di una Londra invernale densa di smog e di fumi di carbone ulteriormente accentuata dall'uso di un apparecchio fotografico di piccole dimensioni e di una pellicola in bianco e nero a grana grossa. Tutto questo unito alla spontaneità e ad un occhio straordinario per la composizione e le connessioni visive dà alle fotografie di Larrain un carattere distintivo che le rende altamente personali e al tempo stesso documenti significativi del periodo. Nella loro sfida ai consueti clichè pittorici esse si accomunano forse al famoso lavoro di Robert Frank The Americans pubblicato per la priam volta a Parigi nel 1958. The letter begins: 'Dear Lynd: I have been very ill and after two months in bed and an introduction to what Marley called "the thick sweet smell of chloroform" I have been sent down here to get better - with the word of specialist and doctor that when I am well again I shall be better than I have been for a long time. This I write because I have often thought of writing to tell you how much I relish your papers. I have often wished that you would collect them - in a kind of Retrospective Reviews volume.' He discusses Omar Khayyam 'I remember once Andrew Lang was annoyed that there were people who thought Omar would serve as their classic as well as Homer.' before returning to Lynd's work. 'I cut out those papers of yours when I see them - and just now when there seems such a dearth of work that shows any feeling for that big - and as I think immensely valuable - part of writing of any kind when people are writing so earnestly I wish you could make your work a criticism in the news.' After a reference to Hall Caine he continues: 'I daresay it will please you to know of one more who always reads an article with your name at the top of it'. He apologises for his letter: 'the news in it are very slapdashedly picked up! - but it will convey to you what I want it to convey - crawling back to this world from that other which was not a bad one either I assure you; it was a very wonderful place when I was at my worst and finding too little of what - of what I can't understand how people get along without. It is in your work. Thanks for it.' According to his entry in the Oxford DNB 'In 1899 because of lung trouble Niven travelled to British Columbia Canada where he regained his health and led an energetic outdoor life. On his return to Glasgow he began a career in journalism. He moved to England and his first novel The Lost Cabin Mine appeared in 1908. . Found unfit for military service Niven spent the First World War in London working for a time in the War Office under the novelist John Buchan. In 1920 he returned to Canada with his wife to settle on the shores of Kootenay Lake near Nelson British Columbia and became a full-time novelist.' He has been described as 'British Columbia's first professional man of letters and the first significant literary figure of the Kootenays'. From the Lynd papers. See her Guardian obituary by Ronald Bergan ‘Britain's original “It†girl who rose from shop assistant to movie star’ 13 September 1999. Both items in good condition lightly aged and folded for postage. Both letters with good content. Eileen Margaret Cond 1911-1984 of Honiton was an enthusiastic autograph collector and she had an ability to draw a more than perfunctory response from her targets. ONE 1944 ALS: 2pp 8vo. Addressed to ‘Dear Miss Cond’ and signed ‘Chili Bouchier’. Begins: ‘Just a wee line to thank you so much for your nice Xmas card which was forwarded to me in Egypt. where she had been touring with ENSA / I am home now safe & sound and fortunately for me on tour with a new play “Lady - Be Careful†so I can escape the flying bombs without feeling too guilty of running away from their horror.’ Having a ‘week out’ before playing Bath ‘we decided to spend our week here and enjoy the antiquities’. She ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ her ‘trip out East and I think it was appreciated by the “boys.â€â€™ With reference to the war she feels things look ‘grand all round now’. She hopes Cond is well and making her ‘post-war plans. It’s fun to do although they may all go wrong - as all plans persistently do. At least that is my experience.’ TWO 1962 TLS. 1p 4to. Twenty-eight single-spaced lines. Addressed to ‘My Dear Eileen’ and signed ‘Chili’. She has written a letter of protest against theatre closures to the Daily Express and ‘Yes the Theatre Royal Portsmouth was one of the casualties I had in mind’. I had another letter from someone from your district bewailing the apathy of the majority of people about the closing of the theatre.’ She doesn’t feel very hopeful: ‘There doesn’t seem to be much one can do about it except wait for the time when people will be sick of staying at home and watching the “goggle-boxâ€. But with new attractions like Telstar and colour TV it doesn’t look as if that time will ever come.’ Her letter has ‘brought a tremendous response from the public’ and she has been ‘deeply moved to learn how many unknown friends I have.’ Despite the ‘stunned silence at the audacity of an artist to raise a voice in protest’ she will soon be working again. She makes a suggestion regarding those who wish to join her. She expresses the ‘happiness and relaxation’ she finds in Spain before turning to her autobiography: ‘The book is now finished having re-written it once more and I just don’t know which publisher to send it to as it is all a bit peculiar. It has to be as my life has been. Not at all like anyone elses.’ She is certain she will gain ‘an inspiration’ regarding the publisher ‘and in the meantime I have high hopes of placing a musical with a Spanish background which I have also written during the quiet times’. Bouchier did not publish an autobiography until 1996 'Shooting Star'. The renewed interest resulted in an appearance on 'Desert Island Discs' and an episode of 'This is Your Life'.
