The binding measures 7 1/8 inches tall by nearly 4 1/4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original brown cloth. The binding is quite worn and bumped with the cloth fraying about the edges. Some gathering slightly sprung but holding. Lacks the flyleaves but the text collates complete. Early notations on the front paste down. Text is toned and foxed and some pages towards the rear are heavily dog-eared. There is browning in the text near the gutters running from page 12 to 21 as if something had been laid in loosely. Pencil notations on page 73 in the blank space at the end of the chapter are hard to decipher. Rear gutter nearly completely open and holding by a few strings. A worn copy of a rare book. "Final" Howes W-19 states "History of the war between the United States and the Sac and Fox nations." John Allen Wakefield 1797-1873 was born in Pendleton South Carolina. His family moved to Tennessee Kentucky and then Illinois. He served in the Illinois militia during the War of 1812 and later became both a physician and a lawyer. Bound volume containing the reports of the first 15 councils dating from 1803 to 1818. Bound in early full sheep. The leather binding is quite worn and dry and is scuffed and abraded. The hinges are sturdy. Lacks the top leather label on the spine; the bottom label reads "Vol. I / From the / 1st to 15th Council / Inclusive." Early owner's name at the headcap of the spine is illegible and no names within. The binding is designs with rules of alternating oval and diamond designs in blind about the edges. There is some pest damage to the outside edges of the text block towards the rear of the book not affecting the text. Text is toned and foxed with some damping at the front and rear. Two blank flyleaves at the front an numerous blank pages at the rear. Most of the reports have their own title pages. The reports that do not have separate title pages are those for: 8 1810; 12 1815; 14 1817; and 15 1818. In the 6th report 1808 there is insect damage for the leaves of pages 7-8 and 9-10 with significant loss of lettering on the fore edge of pages 7-8. Rare. 1-8 4 9-49 i-ii ix 1-2; 1-32; 1-47; 1-44; 1-46; 20 1; 42; 15 1; 56 iii; 56; 36; 88; 69; 40; 45 pages with 10 blank flyleaves at the rear. The final few flyleaves of torn and stained. A few pages have minor chipping to the margins. Spanish language. An important early work on the geography and indigenous peoples of Tierra Del Fuego. Overall condition is Good. Barneby Bredenbury Court Herefordshire'. Edwards was another Herefordshire landowner who resided at Brinsop Court. The author travelled across Canada on the newly opened Canadian Pacific Railroad as the guest of the Vice President of the Manitoba and North Western Railway in the private director's car. The first half of the book is concerned with the Canadian tour the second half is an account of the return trip via Japan Hong Kong and Ceylon. A little foxed but remains an exceptionally bright example. Overall condition is Very Good. This was likely Eldon Steven Summit 1896-1973 the 34th Attorney General of Kentucky and the Republican candidate for Governor of Kentucky in 1947. The text block is sound and the text is toned. The Engraved title page states 1812 but the issues are for 1813. Contains 6 issues for March 1813 through September 1813 without an issue for April possibly never published; the pagination is continuous and not lacking pages. There are 5 full--page copperplate engravings including the engraved title. The other engravings are: Hon. William Heath; Hon. Theodore Sedgwick; Boston Common with a tree; and His Excellency Caleb Strong Governor of Massachusetts. The focus of this journal was the arts and theater but some of the issues also had information on leaders who participated in the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. A scarce work of essays of history and opinion many decidedly political or patriotic. Two quotes on the title page are by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Christopher Manwaring 1774-1832 was born in New London Connecticut and lived much of his life there. He was a friend of James Madison and it is reported that he was an early admirer of Andrew Jackson. This volume contains nearly 20 essays on various subjects many dealing with early American history and political opinions.
