Observations by Fidler presented 'in the form of conversations on the several points of his inquiries with known or named individuals whose nativity to the Transatlantic soil or long residence in the country may entitle their statements to respect.' Book I contains conversations on topics relevant to emigration to the United States. Book II contains conversations on Canada. Instructions from the Commissioners of Audits approved by Queen Victoria's Commissioners of the Treasury which were provided to the Agents General of British colonies. <br /> <br /> Among the "Supplies" procured and forwarded to the colonies are included "Sub-Marine Telegraph Cables Steam Vessels Dredging Vessels" showing a keen involvement with advancing telegraph capabilities after the successful launching of the first telegraphic cable across the Atlantic by the Great Eastern in 1858. <br /> <br /> The instructions include two types of colonies "Crown" and "Representative" seemingly related to the application of the instructions which are "Strictly Applied" in Crown Colonies and "Applied when Practicable" in Representative Colonies. The Crown Colonies include many islands of the Caribbean - Bermuda Jamaica Grenada St. Lucia Bahamas Turks Islands and Trinidad. Bermuda is unusually listed "Convict Service only partly representative. Other Crown colonies are Ceylon Mauritius Western Australia the only Australian state so designated Gibraltar Malta Natal Labuan Sierra Leone Gambia Gold Coast Hong Kong British Guiana British Columbia British Kaffraria St. Helena Falkland Islands Heligoland. <br /> <br /> Representative colonies include Victoria Tasmania and New Zealand Cape of Good Hope New Brunswick Newfoundland Vancouver's Island and St. Kitts. Stitch bound white paper booklets approx 60 pages each with a few pages of ads at begining and end and with blue paper covers. Condition of each varies because the blue covers are becoming brittle the interior paper of each are still very decent. The Feb. 1880 issue's covers are in three large pieces with small chunks missing. Other issues are much better with some small chipping on edges of spine and covers. The July 1880 issue has some moisture stains along spine on front cover. Two issues also have small paper labels glued on the front covers. The covers are loose on the May 1880 issue. The other issues covers are solid. All covers show some light wear and soiling. The interior of all issues are unmarked and are starting to tan. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback.
