One albumen photo sized 3.75 x 4.75 in. mounted on thick board sized 4.25 x 5.25 in. sepia-tinted image minor scuffing edgewear very minor dustsoiling back still VG image. Scarce original albumen photograph of the sealing Schooner Penelope which began sealing voyages on the Pacific Coast in 1885 and continued till foundering off Clallam Bay WA in the Straits of Juan de Fuca in 1904. The image shows the Victoria Sealing Company schooner under full sail leaving Kyuquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island with buildings in the background. The sealing industry in British Columbia was under great pressure from the U.S. Government as it wished to protect its’ sealing monopolies in Alaska. Sir Francis Hincks 1807-1885 was a Canadian businessman politician and British colonial administrator. In 1878 he represented the federal government on the Ontario-Manitoba boundary commission. The commission's decision which was favorable to Ontario was subject to intense criticism and was not been adopted by the newly elected federal government. In this pamphlet Himcks reviews the complex history of the boundary question defends the work of the commission and argues that the government must either accept and adopt the award that had been made or formally appeal it. Ultimately an appeal was made and the award was upheld by the Privy Council in Britain in 1884. C. Blackett Robinson unknown

A Parliamentary printing of British correspondence from the commission established by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 to determine several boundary disputes regarding American and Canadian territory. In the northeast this meant primarily the delineation of the border between Maine and New Brunswick in order to halt growing local disputes collectively known as the Aroostook War.
