Overall a fine image. A handsome unsigned watercolor depicting a single-horse sleigh pulling a clever-looking American trapper with hunting dog barely keeping up. It measures 18" x 35" with the route of the railway; extensions and other railways also noted; other boundaries in green. All the documents creating the Company set forth in the title of the pamphlet are printed each individually numbered. The Railway as the Prospectus states "extends from Ottawa in a south easterly direction a distance of 142 miles and connects with the Central Vermont Railroad at the village of Alburgh Springs Vt. U.S.A."<br /> "The Canada Atlantic Railway CAR was a small regional railway created in 1880 by lumber baron John Rodolphus Booth. Initially planned as part of the transportation network for his vast lumber holdings the railway quickly grew into a general-purpose railway serving passengers and communities along the route. A rare illustrated railroad broadside that advertises an 1881 voyage from Ottawa and several other towns in Ontario via the Canada Central Railroad to Iowa the Dakotas and Minnesota for the purpose of locating and purchasing an American homestead. "Now is the time to Possess Yourselves of the CHEAP LANDS being offered by the Government and Railroad Co's. The extraordinary emigration to the West from the Old Countries promised for the coming summer will be no myth and another year where now you can accommodate yourself to a Splendid Farm fine location for Work Shops &c. will be occupied by the more energetic foreigner. So arrange your business matters and go with us on May 31 1881." The advertised route involves two legs to Chicago on the Canada Central and Michigan Central and thence on connecting lines to Lemars Iowa; and Watertown Yankton and Huron in the Dakota Territory. A fascinating confluence of railroad excursion promotion homestead land advertisement enticement to international emigration and xenophobia. Two volumes pp. xx 494 publisher's ads; xvi 472 with seven maps two folding and one folding profile -- all with hand coloring; 20 chromoxylographic plates; and many additional illustrations in the text. Later full leather with red spine labels marbled endpapers. Scuffing to extremities old restorations to half-title and title pages one map with some foxing and splits at folds some penciled annotations in the margins. Bindings sound plates clean and bright. Hind's exploration of the country between Lake Superior and the Rocky Mountains was prompted by the need for a land access to the gold fields of British Columbia as well as the possible establishment of a railway route to the Pacific Coast. His narrative provides a wealth of information about customs beliefs and condition of the native peoples. Sabin 31934 notes that he "lived almost constantly among the Crees and Chippeways whose habits and peculiarities he was most eager to study and prompt to record." Octavo xix 405 ii 24pp. in blue embossed publisher's cloth leaf 13/14 has a repaired horizontal tear lacks preliminaries; rebacked in new quarler leather new endpapers and paper label. <br/><br/>On this voyage in the "Investigator" the found the westward entrance to the desired Northwest Passage in the Prince of Wales Strait traveling in a route which is detailed in color on the folding map here. Due to unthawed pack ice -through several summers - they had to abandon the "Investigator" to her fate in the ice. M'Clure's name appears on at least eight geographical sites around Alaska and the Northwest Territory. Note: co-author Osborn also became an Admiral. Illustrated by Commander S. Gurney Cresswell R. The report p. 1-10 is dated July 22 1828 and is followed by minutes of evidence May 8-July 15 1828 pp. 11-328 and an appendix of supporting documents pp. 329-77. Among the witnesses listed on p. iii are Samuel Gale Edward Ellice John Neilson Denis Benjamin Viger amd Austin Cuvillier. The British parliamentary Canada Committee was set up in 1828 to study the grievances of Upper and Lower Canada. "Its major recommendations were that a tax should be imposed on unimproved lands held by speculators; that the laws customs and religion of the French Canadians should be respected that the crown revenues should be surrendered to the colonial Houses of Assembly in exchange for a Civil List; that steps should be taken to sell the Clergy Reserves and to divide the proceeds fairly among all Protestant denominations; and that the revenue from the Jesuits Estates should be used for education."
