1835List2711St. John New Brunswick British North America 1835. Three 8 x 13 inch pages folded. Toning at folds; fine. With a clipping from the Quebec Gazette Monthly March 1835. Fine. Little biographical information is available on Thomas Kent save that he was a sailor aboard the Britannia and that the newspaper clipping included here identifies him as “a colored man.†Offered here is a notarized copy of Kent’s testimony concerning the wreck of the Britannia and the consequent deaths of its Captain Thomas Millidge Walker its mates Woodward and Elliot and its cook George Monroe who was also a Black man.

The Britannia was owned by New Brunswick merchants Isaac and John G. Woodward who may have requested the notarized testimony for insurance purposes: the notary writes that it was written on their behalf and emphasizes that:

“That the capsizing of the said Brigantine and her subsequent loss arose solely from the excessive violence of the Gale and a tremendous Sea and not from any default or negligence of the Captain or Crew.â€

The ship had sailed from New Brunswick on December 21 1834 for Berbice in Dutch Guyana with a load of lumber and fish. Six days later the ship’s trials began. Kent testifies that the Britannia:

“was hove to in a violent gale of wind from the north West; that a few minutes before midnight a very heavy sea struck her and capsized her on her beam-ends; . That this appearer i.e. Kent was washed overboard when the sea struck the vessel but fortunately succeeded in getting on board again when he discovered three other Seamen on Deck.â€

According to the clipping the other survivors were James Potter William Phillips and Thomas Gibb. They survived solely because they had been on deck; the others “being below were drowned in the Cabin.â€

The storm began to let up the next morning but “this appearer and the other three Seamen remained on the wreck nine days nearly all of which time it blew a gale of wind.†The men survived “by their fortunately catching a shark on which and a few potatoes that floated up from below they subsisted.†After nine days they were rescued by the Caledonia a packet ship traveling from New York to Liverpool. Arriving in Liverpool three weeks later the men are still not recovered from the ordeal:

“one of the Seamen saved afterwards died in the Infirmary at Liverpool from fatigue and exposure; . this appearer was also so ill in Liverpool from the same causes that his life was greatly despaired of.â€

Overall a harrowing account of interest to scholars of maritime history and Canadian history and of Black people’s roles therein. unknown

Np. 1802. 46x 62cm 18" x 25" printed with hand-written entries vellum with large circular seal attached to deed with ribbon docket on verso mounted on stiff card backing and professionally framed with glass on both sides to display both the deed docket and both sides of the seal plain wooden frame 82x 94cm a fine example of an early Ontario land grant displayed in museum quality very rare. In my experience Lands Grants from this period with the seal intact are very scarce. In addition these documents prior to 1810 are very rare. I only remember seeing any of these once previously; about thirty five years ago in the offices of Joseph Patrick Books Toronto. The area in the Bay of Quinte was settled in the early spring of 1794 by disbanded soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Rogers' Corps. The grantee married the daughter of one of the officers Ensign David Fraser. Joshua Booth 1759-1813 a miller was one of first elected members of the Upper Canadian Parliament assembled in Newark in 1792 and served as a Captain in the Hastings Militia. "Died at Ernestown on Saturday Oct. 31 1813 suddenly Joshua Booth Esq. aged 54 years. He was one of the oldest settlers in that place and ever retained the character of a respectable citizen. Left a widow and ten children." Canniff: Settlement of Upper Canada 1869. The deed has been endorsed and signed by the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada Peter Hunter who held the position from 1799 to 1805. His military responsibilities as commander-in-chief of the forces in Canada necessitated his often absence from York and government was left in the hands of executive councillors believed to be the origination of the "Family Compact". np. 19275282Various locations in Minnesota and Canada 1927. Good. 1721pp. of mimeographed text illustrated with thirty-six original silver gelatin photographs mounted within the text. Original dark green cloth binder text bound with two brass brads. Abrasions and heavy rubbing to covers cloth fraying along spine. Minor toning and occasional thumb-soiling to text. Numerous ink corrections to text. A wonderful handmade detailed travel narrative documenting a two-week canoe excursion into the wilds of northern Minnesota and Canada in 1927. The author Harold R. Greenlee headed out from Winton Minnesota with his friend Donald MacNaught on June 5 and returned to the same location on June 23. In the meantime Greenlee and MacNaught traveled via canoe through "practically virgin wilderness without roads railroads or communication of any kind." Specifically they began their canoe trip up Fall Lake Basswood Lake and Prairie Portage then into Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario Canada. They then journeyed through Birch Lake Carp Lake Knife Lake and other locations along the U.S.-Canada border eventually reaching Saganaga Lake before they turned for home again. They were back in Minnesota by June 16 and spent the remainder of their trip at Red Rock Lake Ogishkemuncie Lake and various parts of the state on the way home. Greenlee's narrative records details on their fishing adventures catching mostly Great Northern Pike but also pickerel and trout locals and others encountered along the way the natural landscape and various natural features especially with regard to their rowing efforts the details in making camp and so forth. Greenlee's narrative is unusually detailed compared to similar fishing excursion memoirs of this type often comprised of a few or more pages per day.

The photographs picture both Harold and Donald in their boat posed with fish carrying their canoe across the portages resting in camp cooking lunch on the river bank and more as well as scenes of the rapids at Prairie Portage an expanse of Knife Lake three different views of Silver Falls at Saganaga Lake a Native American grave on an island in Cache Bay on Lake Saganaga Jasper Falls a scene in Eddy Lake and "A full blooded Indian and canoe he built Saganaga Lake" among others. Harold and Donald spent part of their journey traveling with a party of engineers and a Native American canoeman and some of the photographs capture the other travelers.

A representative entry reads as follows: "Just above the rapids and in Cypress Lake there is a sort of bowl shaped pool in which we saw Bass Wall-eyed pike Pickerel and Great Northern Pike. We decided to cast there a awhile and caught several Great Northern Pike and Pickerel. I hooked one Bass but he succeeded in throwing the hook out of his mouth. I was not sorry of this for the Bass season is not open. After fishing for a while we started up the Lake. We had to go through some narrows which looked more like a river than a lake and this lasted for some few hundred yards. We then had to make an abrupt right hand turn and headed northeast to Cypress Lake."

We were unable to locate any other copies of this likely unique personal canoe trip narrative in OCLC or elsewhere. unknown

1945515H4402Toronto: The Macmillan Company of Canada Limited. Fair. 1945. Reprint. Hardcover. World War II required the United Nations to prepare for the threatened invasion of the American continent by the Axis Powers. Careful study indicated the Nazi timing of this invasion was the early winter of 1941-42. So confident in this plan were the Nazi Storm Troopers that German prisoners of war landing at a port in the St. Lawrence from England in 1940 were convinced they would soon be released by air-borne troops and armed again to assist in the plan of Nazi invasion. The George McNamara Construction Company of Toronto was awarded the contract for building the airport at Goose Bay Labrador and Mr. William Durrell to whom this book is dedicated was appointed General Superintendant of construction.- Paraphrased from Chapter 1. Carr 1895-1959 was appointed Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay in June 1943. Here he recounts his fascinating experiences there concluding with his reflections on the war and the nature of man. Appendix provides a partial list of the mountain of equipment brought in by ship or plane to construct this mammoth project. 12 304 pages. 21.3 x 14 cm. Reprint of the 1944 first edition.
