40637Upper Canada. Manuscript. 1827. 38x 45cm 15" x 18" printed vellum document with hand-written entries upper corners clipped stylized laid on stiff board signed exellent condition. Following the War of 1812 those members of the Upper Canada Militia who had served in an active roll were entitled to land. Varnum Bentington having served in the Flank Company after volunteering from the First Regiment of Prince Edward County would have been considered an active veteran. A graduated scale by rank was involved in the awarding of land and Bentingdon being a private was eligible for 100 acres. His property would be in what is known now as the Tweed area Hasting County. Private Bentingham is listed in the Nominal Roll of Flankers in William Gray's "Soldiers of the King. The Upper Canadian Militia 1812-1815" page 123.: "Burlingham Vernon private." 2339Referring to his role as Bigger in Orson Welles' 1941 stage production of Richard Wright's novel "Native Son" Lee has signed and inscribed this fine sepia toned photograph "To my sister Helen Martin From her brother 'Bigger' Canada Lee." Helen Martin 1910-2000 was an African-American actress who appeared in film and television as well as on stage. Her films include "Hollywood Shuffle" "Cotton Comes to Harlem" "Repo Man" and "Bulworth." She also appeared in the television series "Roots" and other shows. The photograph is stamped on verso "A. Contemporary marbled calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, red labels with gilt lettering, marbled edges, small damage to front joint of vol. 4. In this his principal work Serionne rejected the Physiocratic theories of production and taxation; he also refused to accept the prevailing opinion that the population of France was diminishing rapidly. He strongly believed that the discovery of America had stimulated European agriculture and industry, improving levels of employment and that colonial commerce had itself contributed to an increase in the population of Europe (See: Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus, pp. 315-321). After having run into serious difficulties in France, the author was forced to leave France. This edition with the 'Paris' imprint was apparently destined for export from Holland. - Half-title and first blanks slightly loose at foot in volume one, a very fine copy, with bookplate of G. de Ste Marguerite, very likely belonging to the family of De Bonnet, seigneurs de la Baume, de Saint-Marguerite et de Costefrède.
