The Trollope family made a little industry writing about visits to America, and comments on the land and its peoples. Anthony's mother, Frances, visited in the 1820's, and published a book about the trip in 1832. Anthony visited four times. His substantial trip in 1861 was the basis for this 1862 best seller. Anthony's comments on political matters during this contentious Civil War time were insightful and frank. Neither he nor his mother were beloved in the U.S. for many years. PAIMP 23
