The first European settlement of Nova Scotia was founded in 1604 by the French who established the Acadia colony. A group of Scottish settlers arrived in 1621. Tensions between the French and English led to armed conflict. The British prevailed initially but they were later compelled by treaty to return to colony to France. Captured by the British during Queen Anne's War mainland Nova Scotia was ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island were likewise ceded after the Seven Years' War in 1755. In 1848 Nova Scotia became the first colony in British North America and in the British Empire.
