0076501865. Hardcover. Good. The West Point account book of William Gerhard while a cadet 1865-1869 and 6 documents relating to his military service. William Gerhard 1847-1914 of Philadelphia was the son of Benjamin Gerhard 1811-1864 and Anna Sergeant Gerhard 1815-1873. He married Sally Lyle Howell 1855-1879 and they had one child Arthur Howell Gerhard 1877-1949. He was appointed a cadet on Sept. 8 1864 and was at West Point from June 1865 through June 1869 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the 9th United States Cavalry on June 15. He served in Texas from Oct. 1869 until he resigned on September 30 1874 having been promoted to 1st Lieut on Nov. 19 1873. Following his military service he was a manufacturer of chains and anchors in Ardmore Pa. and then a senior member of Empire Chain Works Philadelphia Pa. The account book is the original calf-bound book issued by West Point showing Gerhard's monthly expenses for items from the commisary and other expenses for the 4 years he was a cadet. With handwritten paper label on the front cover: "Cadet William Gerhard June 1865." The additional documents consist of: 1 a handwritten letter reporting "Gen. Meade took Willie Gerhard to see the President to ask for an appointment at West Point" and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton subsequently making the appointment; 2 printed letter of appointment for Gerhard signed by Stanton and dated Sept. 8 1864; 3 official appointment with blue seal to take effect July 1 1865 signed by Edwin M. Stanton and dated Feb. 22 1866 sic; 4 Gerhard's appointment as Second Lieut. in the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War John A. Rawlins and dated June 24 1869; 5 a leave of absence for 3 months for Gerhard signed by Adjutant General E. D. Townsend and dated June 23 1869; and 6 Gerhard's promotion to 1st Lieut. of the 9th Regiment of Cavalry signed by Secretary of War Wm. W. Belknap and dated Nov. 29 1873. The handwritten letter is unsigned but attributed to James Cornell Biddle 1835-1898 which is consistent with the letter. The account book is in Good Condition: front board is detached but present; lacking leather from spine; pages are clean and tight. Lightly evenly age toned; blank margins either trimmed or edgeworn for the cream mat goes to the image edge at the top and sides while the bottom includes the full title line mat opening 23" X 18¼". First edition. Magnificent allegorical lithograph issued by the famed New York print publisher who also produced a companion piece entitled "The End of the Rebellion in the United States 1865." A large figure of Columbia stands at center atop a huge splitting rock looking to the viewer's right and clutching a waving flag in her right hand; meanwhile her other hand wags a pointing finger toward the viewer's left side. At her feet lie a whip and open shackles representing the abolition of slavery. To the viewer's right stands Abraham Lincoln and indeed the entire right side represents the Republican cause. A stern General Winfield Scott stand behind Lincoln and a crowd of young men strain forward some offering up bags of gold some bearing arms all willing to join the cause; a woman in the foreground covers her eyes and is comforted by two children. The background on this side is horizon of mountains and a glorious sunrise. On Columbia's other side stands the figure of Justice without her usual blindfold raising up her scales in one hand and sword in the other glaring angrily toward all those at the left side of this hectic scene. James Buchanan's sleeps blissfully at the edge of the split rock while next to him crouches his secretary of war John B. Floyd -- who was charged with corruption -- eagerly scooping up gold coins into a large sack. Further back Jefferson Davis clutching a ripped U.S. flag and Alexander H. Stephens stand beside a palm tree with a huge snake coiling up its length and spitting at the scales of justice. An angry cluster of soldiers swirls around them. The background on this side is grim and muted with battle scenes. A superb handsome example of this famous Civil War allegorical print. Kimmel & Forster unknown

1829053217New Orleans: Printed by A. T. Penniman & Co. 1829. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. xii 325 3 cxii; 2 410 pages. Untrimmed. Lacks the final leaf of Volume II part of Table of Contents. Hardcovers bound in early 20th century 3/4 leather with black cloth-covered boards. Raised bands and gilt titles on the spines. Housed in a sturdy cloth-covered slipcase. An ex-library set with removed shelf numbers at the foot of the spines. Library bookplate on the front pasteowns. Each volume has the name of "Junius Davis" stamped in gilt on the front cover. The bindings show moderate rubbing and wear and has a little hinge cracking at the headcap and foot of the spines. Still a sturdy set. In Volume I about 1/3 of the half title is torn away affecting some of the text. The final three leaves have large tears at the bottom margins not affecting the text. In Volume II the leaf for pages 409-410 is torn away at the fore edge with significant loss of text part of the Table of Contents it lists the contents of the last two chapters of the volume. There is heavy damping to the bottom half of the text blocks in both volumes and both volumes have soiling to the title pages and final leaves. Wide margins to the text. This was the copy of Junius Davis 1845-1916. Davis was a lawyer who was the son of George Davis the Attorney General of the Confederate States. Junius was born in Wilmington and studied at the Bingham School near Hillsborough before he enrolled in the Confederate Army at 17 serving with the Tenth North Carolina Regiment. He was in the Battles of Drewry's Bluff and Bermuda Hundred and was part of the attack on Fort Harrison. He was slightly wounded in the trenches around Petersburg during the last days of the war and was part of the retreat to Appomattox. He and some others were cut off from the main group and retreated into the woods only to hear the next day that Lee has surrendered. They were not certain of this and went to Lynchburg where they were advised to go home. They then returned to Greensboro North Carolina in hopes of joining up with Johnston but they learned that Johnston had surrendered there and so they turned themselves over to the Federal Provost Marshall. After the War Junius Davis studied law and joined his father at his law firm. There is a partial faint pencil signature on the torn half title of Volume I reading "Geo." This is likely his father George Davis. Although the Table of Contents at the end of Volume II is incomplete this is overall an attractive and sound set and contains an interesting provenance. <br/> <br/> Printed by A. T. The Aids are present. This manual includes 11 tables in Chapter 2 and 15 tables in Chapter 3. This manual provides guidance on procedures and techniques for evaluation the nuclear play of aggressor forces during tactical exercises. This manual provides the necessary aids for the Aggressor to determine the damage to United States and Allied forces from nuclear strikes. The weapons systems in this manual are based on material contained in the Handbook on Aggressor Military Forces FM 30-102. Chapter 2 contains the tables for Aggressor strike assessments from nuclear weapons. Chapter 3 contains the damage radii tables from the nuclear weapons employed by the aggressor forces. The damage circle template is an aid used in conjunction with the damage letters to evaluate the damage to personnel and equipment. The target element table describes target categories and the damage to be expected within each letter damage circle. The Damage circle radii tables are a series of tables showing the damage radii based on the height of burst and the weapon yield. The first part of the ledger begins on April 15 1840 and goes to Feb. 26 1858 in Salem N.J. The next page is headed "Philadelphia July 16 1859." The Philadelphia entries run through March 1860. The next page is headed "The Regular Book of Entries Belonging to David S. Darmon" and starts with April 11 1865 in Salem N.J. This suggests that the business had been taken over by David Smith Darmon one of the sons of David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 the latter generally known as Smith Darmon. This section runs to April 1875. The next section begins in Salem in Feb. 1889 but does not identify the person who "Commenced business this date." It runs to the beginning of 1892. The final section contains entries from the 1870s. David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 worked with leather as well as renting out horses and carriages. The entries run from making 16 handles for fire buckets for the Union fire Co. to hiring out a horse and sulky. A rare record of a mid-19th-century New Jersey business. In Good Condition: lacking leather from spine; front board is detached but present; back board is almost detached; front free endpaper is detached with loss from lower section without loss of writing; otherwise the pages are solid with occasional soiling or fading. hardcover

22730Very good. Small archive consisting of: a 7.5" x 9.5" sketchbook titled "F.J. Scholz's Own Design Book" containing 38 hand-drawn designs for gravestones on 12 pages; a single 11" x 13 sheet with 9 hand-drawn monument designs by Charles Scholz dated 1885; two original photographs of monuments; six sales cards with mounted engravings of gravestone designs each with handwritten prices and notations in German; and an 1891 business card for the Scholzs' company Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works. All materials in good condition with soiling abrasion and other signs of use. Frederick J. Scholz 1848-1936 was born in Nashville Illinois to German immigrants. He attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne then served as a clerk on a Mississippi River steamboat before moving in 1866 to Evansville where he founded Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works the same year. His son Charles joined the business in the 1880s and in 1895 the firm name was changed to F.J. Scholz and Son. It was still operational as late as 1952. While running his business. Frederick Scholz also served as Census Commissioner for Southern Indiana in 1890 and was elected Indiana State Treasurer in 1894 serving two terms. The work in Scholz's design book and on the engraved sample cards is representative of a time when gravestones were becoming more elaborate and personal. Designs incorporate a range of religious and mourning symbols including crosses doves an anchor and bible a lamb nestled in a seashell a hand pointing upward hands grasped in friendship a weeping willow wreaths roses lilies and other flowers. One monument includes a complex carving of tasseled cloth draped over the stone another has detailed stalks of ripened corn running the length of one side. Makers of these stones--which were offered in both domestic and imported marble and granite--needed a way to showcase the breadth of their offerings. Often that was done through showrooms but this book appears to have have been used to help solicit business from customers far from Evansville. "Henry Knackstedt Inman McPherson Co. Kansas" is handwritten on the front pastedown and the same name is written at the bottom of the business card. An 1891 Kansas newspaper notes that "Henry Knackstedt representative of the Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works of Evansville Ind. was in Haven Tuesday soliciting orders for the firm." That coupled with the fact that this collection of materials came to us from Kansas leads us to believe that these were essentially a salesman's kit of interest not only for the design elements but for what it shows about the scope and sale methods of the American funerary monument business in the late 19th century. unknown

In volume 1 only there is a scraper across the upper left corner of the textblock that has affected that portion of the blank margin in about half the pages.
