184922103Washington 1849. Very good. Lithograph map in seven sections with each sheet measuring approximately 15.5 x 25 inches. Not bound. Second issue of this monumental and important map of the Oregon Trail described by Wheat as "a road guide for Oregon emigrants such as had never previously existed." The second issue is nearly identical to the first which appeared in 1846 but the lithographer's name has been omitted and the numbering of sheets III and VI is reversed. An exceptionally clean set with no splits or repairs and almost none of the toning often seen along the folds. Charles Preuss was a Prussian-born surveyor and cartographer who accompanied John C. Fremont on three of his five exploratory expeditions in the American West. His first great map illustrating Fremont's explorations of 1842 to the Rocky Mountains and of 1843-44 to Oregon and California was published in 1845. Fremont set off on his third expedition later that year but Preuss remained behind using information compiled during the previous expeditions to develop this new more detailed map Described by historian William Goetzmann as "one of Fremont's and Preuss' greatest contributions to the development of the West" the map is constructed at a scale of just ten miles to the inch with each section covering about 250 miles of the route. Preuss provided excerpts from Fremont's narrative and additional notations that anticipated the needs of travelers with details on topography weather location of game forage and sources of water and fuel. This information had not previously been readily available to travelers and the map was put to good used many of the overland trail parties see Rumsey 2773. Graff 3360: "An extraordinary map by a master cartographer." Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 523: "The purview of each section is quite narrowly limited to the emigrant road but the topography is developed in rather more detail than on the parent map. Owing to its rarity and to its having long stood in the shadow of the much more widely known and distributed Fremont map of 1845 Preuss' sectional map of 1846 has been insufficiently appreciated by students of Western history. In particular those interested either in Fremont's travels of 1842-43 or in the evolution of the transcontinental wagon roads will find that the map rewards close study. unknown

The first printing of the Dublin edition preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom if ever been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece.Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free endpaper. 1820105055<p>Archive contains more than 5o items including letters manifests printed and manuscript and pay vouchers etc. in a loose-leaf binder. Some light wear and creasing some minor chips and fold tears normal aging and toning; overall about fine.This is a fairly large archive of the career of Captain Paul Ambrose Oliver c1796-c1848 and his ships the "Louisiana" the "Tiber' and the "Trenton". The archive includes manifests for the shipment of sugar cigars and coffee from Havana to New Orleans St. Petersburg Hamburg and London. One key item is a partially printed Bill of Sale for the Ship "Tiber" dated January 13 1834 for $21500. There is also an estimate for repairs to the "Tiber' dated November 6 1836. The earliest document is dated September 14 1829 and while most of the other documents are between the late 1820s to the 1840s the archive includes some items that are later. There is a letter to his son Brigadier-General and Medal of Honor recipient Paul A. Oliver dated March 29 1869 there is also a copy of the Last Will and Testament of the younger Oliver done in 1911. General Oliver was actually born on his father’s ship the "Louisiana’". There are numerous pay vouchers and receipts from what appears to be a successful career. There is even a rare book list and the burial confirmation for Captain Oliver dated September 17 1849. Other interesting items include a family tree for the Olivers some family letters including a letter to his sons several receipts concerning coffee shipments and a number of ship manifests from various places. Over 50 documents in the collection.</p>

They're set to expire in 2007 unless we reauthorize by Congress which I think most of us anticipate will occur. The Subcommittee examined each of the expiring provisions in great detail. This afternoon we examine the evidence of continued discrimination against racial and language minority citizens since 1982 that have been compiled by a number of non-governmental organizations who will be testifying. I'd thank these organizations for the time and effort that they have put into completing these reports and in making sure that this Committee and Congress has before it a complete and accurate record of discrimination over the last 25 years. In continuing to reauthorize the temporary provisions Congress on four separate occasions examined the extent to which discrimination continued to exist by analyzing information such as enforcement statistics minority voter registration rates minority voter turnout and litigation pursued to protect minority voting rights. Federal agencies such as the United States Commission on Civil Rights were instrumental in investigating analyzing and reporting back to Congress on the state of minority voting during each consideration. Each time Congress concluded based upon the evidence presented that the exceptional conditions which existed in 1966 continued to exist in 1970 1975 1982 and in 1992 when it was last reauthorized. This afternoon the Committee continues to examine whether the exceptional conditions warranting the extension of the temporary provisions continue to exist in 2006. U. S. Wilkinson was a high ranking officer in the Revolutionary War War of 1812 and Governor of the Louisiana Territory. He drank used opium and had a checkered career. He was involved in the Conway Cabal against George Washington and the Burrs Conspiracy against Jefferson. He was unsuccessfully court-martialed. In addition to these topics his Memoirs contain much material on his activities in New York State. The First Vertebrate Paleontologist On The West Coast Of The United States He Is Best Known For His Taxonomy Of Vertebrate Fossils At The La Brea Tar Pits. In 1912 He Was Appointed Chairman Of The Department Of Paleontology At The University Of California. That Same Year He Began His Famous Studies Of Vertebrates At The La Brea Tar Pits. He And His Students Categorized Many Of The Vertebrate Fossils Found At The Site And Many More Were Placed In Storage. The Smilodon Was Later Established As The California State Fossil. In 1918 He Was Elected To The United States National Academy Of Sciences. A Biography Which Details His Efforts To Preserve Wild Lands In California And Throughout The United States Was Published In 2005. In 1919 Merriam Served As President Of The Geological Society Of America. In 1920 He Was Appointed Dean Of Faculty At The University Of California Berkeley But He Left That Same Year To Become President Of The Carnegie Institution In Washington D.C. He Accomplishments As President Included Helping To Advance The Educational Programs Of The National Park Service As Well As Helping To Preserve The California Redwoods. He Was Elected To The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences In 1921. His Published Papers Are Collected In A Four-Volume Set Published In 1938 By The Carnegie Institution. Merriam Was A Founding Member Of The Galton Institute And A Cautious Political Supporter Of Eugenics. His Paternal First Cousin Frank Merriam The Eldest Child Of Civil War Veteran Henry C. Introduction by Rob Rulon-Miller and with a check-list by him of better than 270 books chapbooks broadsides etc. printed by Emerson Wulling at his Sumac Press in both Minneapolis and La Crosse Wisconsin. The text proper consists of a 2-part interview conducted by Schanilec and Rulon-Miller with Emerson Wulling in 1995 and 1999. Wulling who began printing in 1916 and continued to print into the 21st century printed longer than any printer before him - 87 years in all - a record of sorts which quite probably will never be broken.
