Encouraged his landowning father, Mifflin received art instruction first from his father and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then studied in Germany becoming a good painter, as well as a good photographer later in life. Believing that paint fumes were damaging his health, Mifflin stopped painting to concentrate on writing poetry, specifically sonnets. He would eventually publish over 500 sonnets, and was known as America's Greatest Sonneteer. PA PAMPH 19_29 BX1 x 2c
