23256Boudoir card 5" x 8" albumen photo on the mound of "Richardson Artist" showing a team of horses pulling a large model factory building with the words "Glenwood Mills Dress Silks" on the roof. Not further identified but most likely the Glenwood Mills in Easthampton Massachusetts which according to an account in the Fitchburg Sentinel began manufacturing dress silks in August 1881. We have been unable to locate an image of that factory for comparison likely because it burned to the ground in 1887. Several flags are mounted on the building suggesting it may have been part of an Independence Day parade. In any case it surely would have been an attention-grabbing form of advertising. Mount is chipped at one corner and rubbed at the others; image very good. . unknown
24011Collection of 179 snapshots documenting flood and erosion control projects on levees and farmland in the Illinois and Mississippi River watersheds in the 1920s and 1930s including the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps CCC in Illinois. The collection was assembled by Leon C. Craig a civil engineer who was employed by the State of Illinois Division of Waterways in the 1920s and served as a project supervisor at the Tuscola Illinois CCC camp in the mid-to-late 1930s. Craig was involved in a number of projects relating to flood prevention and mitigation and the promotion sustainable agriculture through better drainage systems. Several interesting early images show flooded rivers overflowing their banks and flooded towns; most document construction work levees culverts and other drainage infrastructure and topography relating to waterways as well as the grounds and men of the Tuscola CCC camp. Nearly all of the photos are in very good condition; a few have creasing or small chips. While there are enough captions on the versos to identify the compiler and some of the locations most are uncaptioned. Size ranges from 2.75" x 4.5" to 4" x 6". . unknown
11494Chicago: Process Photo Studios Photographic Image. Very Good. No Binding. Small photo pack containing 10 black and white photos 2.5 X 3.5 inches each of the interior and exterior of the Universal Terminal Warehouse Co. building in Houston Texas circa 1920s. The building was originally known as the Butler Brothers Building in 1919 a two-story brick and concrete structure at the corner of Washington Avenue and Elder Street. In 1924 the Universal Terminal Warehouse Company replaced Butler Brothers who left Houston and managed the building until the 1980s.Two additional stories were added in 1940; these photos show the original two-story building. The City of Houston took over the building in 2009 and completed a renovation in 2011 winning an award from Preservation Houston. The Butler Brothers Building as it is called today is home to the Houston Permitting Center and was designated as a Protected Historic Landmark in 2013. The building is historically significant for its architecture and its role in Houston commerce and transportation history during the 20th century. No other copies of this package of photos have been located through OCLC or in the trade. A rare archive of early images of one of Houston's historically preserved buildings. 0. 1914011883Britt Iowa 1914. Photographic Image. Good. No Binding. Second grade class photo Britt Hancock County Iowa 1914. Antique photograph mounted on card stock. Image measures 5 X 7 inches with card mount 7 X 9 inches. The upper-left corner was torn away not affecting the photograph and is held in place with tape on the back. Waviness to the card stock and some minor corner wear. Verso is blank except for the name "Gordon" penciled in at the upper-right corner affected by tear and has some minor discoloration spots. The boy on the front row with the sign displayed it upside down to the photographer see scans. Interestingly all the girls in the class are positioned on the back row with their teacher separated from the boys on the two front rows. One teacher and 36 students are shown in the photo-23 boys and 13 girls. We found a list of teachers for the Britt School 1914-1915 on a genealogy web site so the teacher shown in the photo could have been Bessie Matson Jessie Ross Millie Anderson Lydia Burgardt Marie Boutilier or Winnifred Alridge. Fun fact about Britt Iowa: It is home to the National Hobo Convention since 1900 and the Hobo Museum. unknown
22999Very good. Original 6" x 8" black and white photograph on a 10" x 12" mount captioned "Mairposa Co. Exibit" sic and credited "Simon & Robinson Photog." Very good condition blank on the back. Undated but ca. 1915 based on the period when Simon & Robinson were active. Their firm is described in a 1913 promotional book for neighboring Merced County as "especially interested in public affairs and the development of the county." This image was presumably taken at a state or regional agricultural fair and was intended to showcase the bounty produced by Marisposa County farmers. Three long benches and two side tables are shown covered in artfully arranged melons potatoes cucumbers squash corn grapes and other fruit and flowers. unknown
