Binding Instruction including insertion of plates is at the end of the volume although they were sometimes bound individually. These books were of considerable interest because at the time they were one of the only sources of information as to current conditions in foreign countries. Most travel & exploration books were of a more historical nature. There were 10 or more volumes published in this series. Jones of Bristol Tennessee who had sent a $10 donation to the Boys' Clubs of America in response to Hoover's appeal in the organization's behalf. Herbert Hoover 1874-1964 served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. After leaving the presidency he and his wife had lived at Palo Alto California. Following her death in 1944 he relocated to New York City; the address on this letter is 420 Lexington Ave. NYC. An attractive promotional piece issued by the New Home Land Company of Little Rock Arkansas and promoting excursion fares via the Missouri Pacific and Iron Mountain railroad and lands along the line of the Rock Island Railway Promotes Arkansas as "The Land of Homes" where "fertile soil long growing seasons and mild climate make prosperous farmers healthy families and happy homes." The text is targeted at midwesterners noting that "in Arkansas you can grow the same kind of crops and farm as you do in Missouri Iowa Illinois and Indiana" -- but with a longer growing season and at lower cost. The back includes detailed text relating to 15000 acres for sale near the new town of Sparkman along the Rock Island line. Not found in OCLC. unknown

Construction battalion detachment was the one assigned to the Solomon Islands where they performed major tasks to create a major docking facility while fighting malaria and insects. This remarkable volume has hundreds of photographs that document the 1008th which was one of the larger battalions some on smaller islands had as few as sixty men. Laid in are papers of how the Association funds were spent on the printing engravings editing and other task in producing one of the most thorough Seabee volumes at the cost of $9480.50 in 1946. Only two copies are found on OCLC. Also laid in is a mimeographed list of the men and where they were located in the photographs of the entire battalion. A handsome copy near fine bound in brown and blue cloth lettered in brown and blue Owner's subscriber name stamped in gilt to upper board.
