Unclear whether this is in Mock's handwriting. Theodore F. Mock was listed as the Camp Custer Photographer in David V. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library 2013. Camp Custer at Battle Creek Michigan had over 100000 US Army troops pass through its doors between 1917-1919. Sept. 29th 1918 was the day in 1918 after a 56-hour-long bombardment Allied forces breached the so-called Hindenburg Line the last line of German defenses on the Western Front during World War I. Hays on the Occasion of Its Centenary Dinner Grand Ball Room Waldorf Astoria March 21 1928". Will H. Hays in addition to authoring the chapter in this book on "Motion Pictures" also managed Warren G. Harding's successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. He was head of MPPDA at the time of this publication. Very Good lacking the dustjacket spine titles faded yet still legible rear hinge cracking. A collection of small religious books two were published Richmond both are Psalms and Hymns 1867 the rest NY 3 Bibles 1829 1864 1869 or Philadelhia Book of Common Prayers 1868. Range in height from 3 7/8" to 5 5/8". Together with an Autograph Book no publisher or date but inscription dated 1866. All were owned by a Southern minister in Memphis named J. O.James Owen Stedman and his daughter Ella Owen Stedman. Stedman was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Shelby County from 1854-1868. He then helped to found the Alabama Street Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1868. The autograph book with one page presentation inscription to Stedman dated Dec. 1866 with ten signatures of elders and deacons of the church on 3 pages. No further autographs or writing in the book. Autograph book good loss of half the spine leather the book quite rubbed. The small Bibles etc. are Very Good to Near Fine. A unique collection of post Civil War Memphiana. . Leather. Very Good. Very good. 7 x 4.5 inches 213 pp side-stapled wrappers with map of Mexican mining centers on rear wrapper. Dampstain to first three leaves staples rusted otherwise very good. The author Luis also Louis R. Goldbaum was born in Mexico ca. 1871 to a Prussian-Jewish father and a Mexican mother. His older brother David Goldbaum 1858 was a surveyor who explored much of Baja California and from 1927-30 served as the Mayor of Ensenada. Luis worked as a mining engineer in Mexico and in border towns in Texas and Arizona before settling in the Los Angeles area around 1923. In a one-page introduction to this book he explains: "I have endeavored to give in full to the mining men prospector and explorer while in Old-Mexico a complete detailed and general information on the procedures steps to take Offices Government-Departments and Officials to occur and to see and costs and expenses until acquiring the desired object; illustrating to him complete Mexican-Mining Law of the Republic of the United States of Mexico; and in many other valuable and most needed general information." The book includes both an overview and a more extended digest of Mexican mining law; a list of procedures for obtaining a claim with specifics for foreigners; information on taxes assay fees and other expenses; information on minerals assay tests and methods of processing ore; a glossary of mining terms in Spanish and English and more. A page at the beginning notes that the buyer of this book is entitled to free membership in the "Mail-Consulting Department" of the "Mexican General Advisory Co." giving said buyer the right to consultation on changes in Mexican mining law "and any other dependable information on Old Mexico matters" for a period of one year.
