22421Softcover. Very good. 7" x 11" strong-tied photograph album containing 35 snapshots 3.5" x 5" corner-mounted one per page rectos only. A small album without captions but with good documentary content. The first two images are a nice Juneau street scene and a shot of the Alaska Air Transport Terminal in the Juneau harbor. These are followed by some rural scenes showing country roads and houses that we suspect are outside Juneau and several shots of a terminal where cargo is being either loaded from rail car to ship or vice versa. From there three shots show a ship's passage presumably across the Gulf of Alaska from Juneau to Kodiak as the remainder of the images 20 seem to be from Kodiak. There are several nice images of the Kodiak dock and harbor several of a rural road and house a view looking down at the town from a hillside and many shots of the beautiful Russian Orthodox church. unknown
1922012406Houston Texas 1922. Letter. Very Good. No Binding. Three-page typed letter dated 2/8/22 on association letterhead signed by T.J. McCabe of the Houston Co-operative Dairy Association Ltd to a stockholder Mr. Sam E. Sorelle. 8.5 X 11 inches folded twice. Mild wear. Cover included creased and worn. Letter content includes the "depressing conditions" in the preceding year 1921 association business intent to incorporate issues of additional stock to current stockholders to raise money food products and an attached financial statement. The association was only three years old and had survived the economic woes of the previous year while older stronger companies had collapsed. That coupled with optimism for their Mayflower trade-name products-"the best grade of butter made or sold in the Houston market" and "the best ice cream in Houston"-presented in their view a positive outlook for future profitability. The company's plant was located at 1120 North Main St. in Houston Texas. Their office location indicated on the letterhead was at 806 Main Street at Rusk in the Carter Building Samuel Fain Carter. An interesting piece of dairy agribusiness and food manufacturing history in Houston in the early post-World War I years. Three pages typed and signed by T.J. McCabe and fastened with a small pin or nail in the upper-left corner. unknown

"The National Air Races also known as Pulitzer Trophy Races are a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The science of aviation and the speed and reliability of aircraft and engines grew rapidly during this period; the National Air Races were both a proving ground and showcase for this. -- In 1920 publisher Ralph Pulitzer sponsored the Pulitzer Trophy Race and the Pulitzer Speed Trophy for military airplanes at Roosevelt Field Long Island New York in an effort to publicize aviation and his newspaper. The races eventually moved to Cleveland in 1929 where they were known as the Cleveland National Air Races.2 They drew the best flyers of the time including James Doolittle Wiley Post Tex Rankin Frank Hawks Jimmy Wedell Roscoe Turner and others from the pioneer age of aviation. These air races helped to inspire Donald Blakeslee as a young boy. Other races included in the U.S. National Air Races were the Mitchell Trophy Race the Town & Country Club Race for civilians the Kansas City Rotary Club Trophy "for all three military services" and the Glenn Curtiss Trophy Race for "biplanes with engines having less than 510 cubic inches. Starting in 1929 the races usually ran for up to 10 days usually from late August to early September to include Labor Day. Aviation promoter Cliff Henderson was managing director of the National Air Races from 1928 to 1939. During World War II the races were on hiatus. The races included a variety of events including cross-country races originating in Portland Oakland and Los Angeles with a final destination in Cleveland.4: 79-81 Also included were landing contests glider demonstrations airship flights and parachute-jumping contests. The more popular events were the Thompson Trophy Races which started in 1929; a closed-course race where aviators raced their planes around pylons; and the Bendix Trophy Race the "transcontinental air race" across most of the USA starting in 1931. In 1929 a Santa Monica California to Cleveland Ohio route was started for the Women's Air Derby nicknamed the "Powder Puff Derby" featuring well-known female pilots such as Amelia Earhart Pancho Barnes Bobbi Trout and Louise Thaden. Thaden was the winner in the heavy Class D engines with 510-810 cubic inches 8400-13300 cm3 while Phoebe Omlie won the light Class C engines with 275-510 cubic inches 4510-8360 cm3. This was also the year for the first female pylon race the winner of which was awarded the Aerol Trophy beginning in 1931".-wikipedia. unknown

Decorative Bookplate Of Colorado Governor Ralph Carr Showing Abraham Lincoln With An Open Book In Front And Three Books Behind Him; Also Decorative Bookplate Of Frank Stephen Dolley The Noted Western Collector. His Father Was A Miner And The Family Moved Around To Several Colorado Towns Including Aspen And Cripple Creek. After Graduating From Cripple Creek High School In 1905 Ralph Went On To Study Law Earning His Law Degree In 1912. His Law Practice Took Him To The Town Of Antonito In Southern Colorado. After Living In Antonito For 11 Years Ralph His Wife Gretchen And Their Two Adopted Children Robert And Cynthia Moved To Denver. It Was Very Different From The Small Towns Ralph Had Lived In Most Of His Life. Ralph Had Become A Very Well-Respected Lawyer And When He Moved To Denver He Became Assistant Attorney General. In 1929 He Was Appointed By President Herbert Hoover To Serve As U.S. Attorney For Colorado. During This Time Gretchen Died And Ralph Continued Raising Their Two Children Alone. Eleven Years After Gretchen'S Death Ralph Married Eleanor Fairall. In 1938 Ralph Decided To Run For Governor Of Colorado And Won. Three Years Later The United States Entered World War Ii When Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor In Hawaii On December 7 1941. After The Attack Many Americans Began To Distrust Japanese Americans Even Those Who Were United States Citizens Fearing That They Might Be Spies. Because Of This The United States Government Forced Thousands Of Japanese Americans Mostly From California To Leave Their Homes And Live In "Internment Camps." However Unlike Many Others Ralph Carr Believed In Japanese Americans' Loyalty And He Did Not Send Japanese Coloradans To The Camps. He Believed That The Constitution Protected All Americans. When He Ran For The U.S. Senate In 1942 Ralph Lost The Election And Some Say This Was Because Of His Support For Japanese Americans. He Decided To Run For Governor Again In 1950 But He Died Just A Month Before The Election. He Was 62 Years Old. Soon After His Death Coloradans Began To Recognize That He Had Been Right That There Were No Cases Of Japanese Spies In America. Today Ralph Carr Is Remembered As Someone Who Stood Up For The Rights Of Others Even When His View Was Not Popular. He Has Been Memorialized In A Statue In Denver'S Sakura Square And In The Naming Of The Ralph Carr Memorial Highway And The New Ralph Carr Judicial Center In Downtown Denver. In 1999 The Denver Post Named Him Colorado'S "Citizen Of The Century." Ralph Carr Is Also Memorialized By A Plaque In The State Capitol That Reads "Dedicated To Governor Ralph Carr As A Wise Humane Man Not Influenced By Hysteria And Bigotry Directed Against The Japanese Americans During World War Ii. By His Humanitarian Efforts No Colorado Resident Of Japanese Ancestry Was Deprived Of His Basic Freedoms And When No Others Would Accept The Evacuated West Coast Japanese Except For Confinement In Internment Camps Governor Carr Opened The Doors And Welcomed Them To Colorado. The Spirit Of His Deeds Will Live In The Hearts Of True Americans." Frank S. Dolley Was Born In Maine Graduated From Pomona College In 1907 And Completed Bowdoin Medical School In 1911. He Settled Permanently In Los Angeles In 1929 Where He Was A Prominent Thoracic Surgeon.
