"Judge Hebbard was a Superior Court Judge for the San Francisco area during the early 1900's -- it seems that in 1907 he had some run-ins with other members of the bar due to some excessive imbibing and a period of despondency which he showed a bit too widely when he tried to kill himself during an annual Bar Association dinner. Field 602: "The fur traders of the eighteenth century.in coasting along the shores of Vancouver's and Nootka Sounds carried with them some of the words of each of the tribes who they visited; until at the mouth of the Columbia River they found a quick-witted people who adopted the mongrel jargon they heard from the lips of strangers and blended the fragments of twelve native tongues with some English and French terms into a sort of language possessing nearly 500 words.
