Carl Jackson The Pennsylvania State University - " Dear Mr. Jackson I wanted to draw your attention to the unique communications experiment in bringing the Apollo 11 live telecasts to Anchorage. This will be the first direct intercontinental link to Alaska using two communications satellites in a complex distribution chain for the tests." He goes on to talk about the experiment "heralding a new era for Alaska" and how it will in particular to bring audio-visual techniques to Alaskan schools libraries hospitals universities and community centers. He finishes by by asking Jackson for future help in bringing new techniques or applications "to help accelerate this era". Mike Gravel was the colorful Democratic Senator from Alaska 1969-81. He became nationally known in 1971 for his filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal effectively ending the draft in the United States and for putting the Pentagon Papers into the public record by reading 4100 pages of the 7000 page document into the Senate record. W. Carl Jackson at the time was Director of Libraries at Penn State University. The letter is Near Fine folded twice for mailing staple top left corner small crease top edge. On Grattan Tyrrell and Company Engineers letterhead Tyrrell fulfills a request for a copy of his most important book: "I take pleasure in forwarding you a copy of the book "A History of Bridge Engineering" the price of which since it was printed twenty years ago having been increased to $6.00 instead of $5.00 originally. This book was published privately by myself and I still have the latest edition. 18930073221893. Very Good -. 1 typed letter dated Oct. 3 1893 from Joseph Wheeler on stationery of the Committee of the Territories House of Representatives to J. W. Morgan of Florence Alabama. Joseph Wheeler 1836-1906 represented Alabama in Congress 1881-1883 and 1885-1899. He graduated from West Point in 1859 and jointed the Confederate Army in 1861 serving with the Army Corps of Cavalry of the Western Arm and becoming lieutenant general in 1865. Known as "Fighting Joe" he also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. J. W. Morgan was the first superintendent of the public schools in Florence Alabama in 1890. A recent graduate of A. & M. College in Auburn he was teaching Latin and English literature at the state normal school in Florence when he died suddenly on Sept. 17 1894. In this letter Wheeler is responding to a request for assistance from Morgan. The letter written 20 days after Willkie's loss to FDR in the 1940 presidential election thanks a supporter for her good will and also ".a heartening faith in the principles for which I stand". In this letter dated Sept. 18 1961 Johnson is extending his personal invitation as Chairman of the National Advisory Council for the Peace Corps for the recipient to attend a regional Peace Corps Conference one of 14 scheduled to take place after the passage of the Peace Corps act. The 6 paragraph letter gives detailed reservation information and is SIGNED in blue ink "Sincerely Lyndon B. Johnson". The Peace Corps was established by Executive Order 10924 issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1 1961 announced by televised broadcast March 2 1961 and authorized by Congress on September 21 1961. The Sargent Shriver letter dated Oct. 3 1961 thanks the recipient for serving as a member of the Host Committee for the Peace Corps Regional Conference held in Minneapolis MN. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. was the first director of the Peace Corps 1961-1966 appointed by his brother-in-law President John F. Kennedy. In 1972 he was chosen to be the Democratic nominee for Vice President to run with George McGovern after Thomas Eagleton resigned from the ticket. The recipient of both letters was W. Carl Jackson who was then Chief Acquisitions Librarian University of Minnesota. Mr. Jackson later became Dean of Libraries at Indiana University and authored the book "The Log of the Carla Mia." about his solo sailboat crossing of the Atlantic in 1978. He was lost at sea and declared legally dead in 1981 attempting to sail from Europe to America after wreckage from his boat was found off the coast of Spain. Both letters are Fine folded twice for mailing. A unique archive early Peace Corps material is SCARCE. unknown

Benjamin Cummings Truman 1835-1916 born in Rhode Island had a career as a journalist and worked on the staff of President Andrew Johnson before being sent to California as a special Post Office agent 1866-69 where he founded many new post offices and reestablished the Butterfield mail route. He returned to journalism as a correspondent for the New York Times and the San Francisco Bulletin eventually becoming owner of Los Angeles Star. He next became a press agent for the Southern Pacific and editor of its journal The Wave.
