Secondarily publication was stimulated by the nation's first income tax enacted to finance the War. "If all the Revenue Districts in the country are gone over and the results recorded with the same care as is here done the government will possess an immense mass of correct information upon which to base its action." The largest annual income reported was over $1.8 million A.T. Stewart. William Astor reported $838000. 160000 heads of families or "about one in eight has a taxable income and only one in sixteen has a taxable income of more than $1000." If the votes of the First district are to be considered as wholly out of the question in consequence of the riotous proceedings which drove the Inspectors from the room where they were canvassing the result of the election must then be determined from the votes of the three remaining districts." Lansing was Henry Gansevoort's sister.<br /> <br /> Gansevoort was a decorated soldier who served in battle during the Civil War. He served briefly as Private in the 7th NY Militia in Washington DC but soon obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in March 1862 and served with his battery on the Peninsula and at Second Manassass. He was on the Maryland Campaign and saw action at Antietam.<br /> <br /> This biography is complemented with extracts from his letters to home which add much detail to the description of each battle many of the extracts chosen by his sister.<br /> <br /> 4to 335pp. Bound in full red morocco gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers gilt decorated spine beveled edges aeg.
