18661307Newburgh 1866. <p>Framed manuscript Sheets with inserted short typescript. 5 x 8 inches. 6pp. Browned folds small hole at top of one page no loss preserved under glass; front plate cracked.</p> <br /> <p>Charter of a new lodge from 1866 which contains the names of many leading businessmen of Newburgh New York. Brother John L. Westervelt presented an original petition to Newburgh Lodge 309 asking if a new lodge could be organized in Newburgh “believing that the best interest of Masonry would be best subserved thereby.â€</p> <br /> <p>A charter was granted to Hudson River Lodge 607 on June 8 1866. Forty-six signatures are appended to the document. Many are designated “true†and a few are designated “non affiliatedâ€. David A. Scott was voted master; G. Frederick Wiltsie senior warden; Samuel Stanton junior warden and John Alsdorf as first secretary. </p> <br /> <p>John L. Westervelt 1826-after 1880 the petitioner was a silversmith whose specialty was repairing and replating Gorham objects. He married Catherine Gorham of New York.  “After the Lodge had been declared open the Master arose and on behalf of Bro. John L. Westervelt presented to the Lodge a full set of solid silver jewels for the use of the offices. The following resolution was then offered and adopted unanimously: Resolved That the thanks of this Lodge be and are hereby tendered to Brother John L. Westervelt for the very beautiful set of jewels which he has so generously presented to the Lodge.â€Â History of Hudson River Lodge.</p> <br /> <p>Charles Estabrook 1823-1900 bookstore owner and librarian at Newburgh Free Library signed as did Chancy M. Leonard mayor of Newburgh who died in 1874. Another jeweler and silversmith Thomas W. Purdy ca. 1830-after 1880 also signed. David A. Dark brown straight grain leather gilt lettered and ruled rubbed at spine and extremities hinges starting. 104 pp. plus two lithograph folding plates frontis: plan of the hospital wards; tinted lithograph view of the hospital. Lithograph plate after page 54 comprising a view of the lunatic asylum. Most of the text is interleaved with blanks. Very Good with the bookplate of William Ten Eyck Hardenbrook. This may be the man whom the New York Times called P.T. Barnum's first press agent New York Times 30 November 1931. <br /> <br /> Included are lists of Governors and Officers of the Society from its 1770 founding until January 1 1846; names and dates of appointment of the Society's physicians and surgeons; numbers of patients received and discharged with dispositions; data on "Lunatics" admitted since the Bloomingdale Asylum's 1821 founding and their dispositions; nativity of patients including patients from Africa and the West and East Indies; "supernumerary seamen" and a long list of Members of the Society about six pages. <br /> Information included here was updated in several printings: 1833 and 1838 preceding this publication and 1856.<br /> Sabin 54484. Hubbard authored middle eastern conference papers world and church history during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Volumes extremities are gently worn shelf wear corner tips more so. Beautiful red and black elaborate TITLE page. Scattered foxing and offsetting from engravings throughout; Dedication page has a shadow at gutter of see photo but does not detract. A previous owner has placed a small name stamp on dedication and Preface page. Tissue guards in place for all full page engravings. In addition to Hubbard bookplate there is a copperplate script gift inscription tipped in to same page. 225 pages. Hard to find title. Beautiful item. Tight text block. Rev. 18295234New York: New York Protestant Episcopal Press 1829. Very good. Broadside 10.5 x 9 inches. Old folds foxing creasing and toning with substantial but irregularly-trimmed margins. An unrecorded New York broadside advertising the opening of the New York Protestant Episcopal Press NYPEP and related activities at No. 46 Lumber Street in New York City in 1829. The text states that "PRINTING of every description will be executed for Churches Bible and Common Prayer-Book Societies Tract Societies Missionary or Education Societies and all other religious institutions of the Protestant Episcopal Church at the lowest rates and in the best manner" and that the new establishment will "also be the publication office of The Family Visiter and Sunday School Magazine; and of The Children's Magazine." The text also includes notes about the business of the organization as well as notices to "Booksellers who are members of the Protestant Episcopal Church" and "secretaries of religious and charitable associations." In addition to their printing and binding work the broadside states that the NYPEP will take charge of the depositories of five New York institutions -- the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday Union the New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the Auxiliary New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society and the New York Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Society. The bottom half of the broadside is taken up with a listing of the organization's Board of Trustees "Other Managers" the general agent book-keeper printer William Van Norden and binder Christian Brown along with a postscript with details on various forthcoming publications by the press. William Van Norden was a prolific printer in New York in the first half of the 19th century producing more than just religious works. He printed the collected works of Benjamin Franklin Hannah Moore's memoir and the Proceedings of the New York Historical Society among many other works and later helped produce The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans.
