Hardbound. Good. Pierre Viaud was the author of a book 'Naufrage et aventures de M. Pierre Viaud, natif de Bordeaux, capitaine de navire' (Shipwreck and Adventures of Monsieur Pierre Viaud), first published in French in 1768 and in English in 1771. It tells the story of the shipwreck on 16 February 1766 of Le Tigre, a French merchant brigantine on which Viaud was a passenger. The ship was wrecked in a great storm, en route to New Orleans 300 yards east of Dog Island (on the Gulf Coast of Florida). This translation by Mrs. Griffith. Previously attributed to Jean Gaspard Dubois-Fontanelle, the editor of the French edition. The account was an international best-seller. This little Lewistown, PA edition is VERY SCARCE.
