An incomplete set: Eight of twelve facsimile cards numbered 1 to 8 with a note by Elizabeth Downs secretary to the Book Club of California dated September 22 1949 stating that parts 9 to 12 were "in preparation and would be sent to members by the end of the year." The set of twelve was completed even if this particular set was not. The cards announce the sailings of "clipper" ships to San Francisco and are facsimiles of originals in the Bohemian Club. 1/850 copies. "Cards" are tipped into single folded sheets with text explanations by various authors. Stored in a blue cloth- covered portfolio and housed in a matching blue cloth-covered slipcase with leather spine labels. The box is lightly sunned at spine and the labels are edge-clipped. Issued in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Chino and sponsored by the East Side Thimble Club this short history gathers together the recollections of early settlers and leading citizens of the city which is located in the southwest corner of San Bernardino County. Chino and its surroundings have long been a center of agriculture and dairy farming a history which dates back to the Spanish land grant forming Rancho Santa Ana del Chico. 195570567San Francisco: F.M. Nonaka & Co 1955. Wraps. Near fine. A small Japanese paper sample book issued by F.M. Nonaka & Co. in San Francisco circa 1955. The pocket-size booklet 4" x 6" contains eight samples with color variants for the final three and is bound with staples and a green paper spine in printed paper wrappers. In 1903 Frank Masakazu Nonaka 1885-1967 emigrated to America where he attended high school and business college. After 13 years with the Okada Company he established F.M. Nonaka & Company a successful import and export business located at 214 Front Street in San Francisco. The company ceased operations during the Second World War when Nonaka his wife Setsu and their daughters were forcibly evacuated from their home and then detained at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah. In a display of resilience Nonaka returned to San Francisco after the war and revived his business in a new location: 655 Battery Street. He was naturalized in 1954 and was actively involved in several community organizations including the Japanese American Citizens League JACL and the Northern California Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Additionally there is a reproduction of a photograph of a 72-foot steam yacht at Lake Tahoe. Also included are two duplicate photographs. Seven are 6x10 inches the others are 5x7 inches or slightly smaller. A railroad town on Transcontinental Railroad Truckee originally named Coburn Station was the terminus for passengers traveling to Tahoe City reached by a 15-mile rough mountain road.
