1849WRCAM49949New York 1849. 1p. of a bifolium docketed on verso of second bifolium leaf. Mailing folds slight edge discoloration else fine. An intriguing note regarding life insurance for a forty-niner traveling to California in 1849 with Henry Webb and John Woodhouse Audubon. The note reads: "Langdon H. Havens wants a life insurance permit for California to go over the Overland Route in company with persons bearing dispatches from our Government in a Company of 100 or more. He wants to leave for Washington immediately." Perhaps the twenty-six-year- old Haven sometimes spelled Havens originally intended to join a safe government- sponsored expedition from Washington but he was in fact among the 100 Forty-Niners who embarked on a famously ill-fated overland expedition led by Army Colonel Henry Webb with John Woodhouse Audubon son of the famous ornithologist as his second in command which left New York on February 8. <br> <br> The company proceeded by ship train stagecoach and riverboat to New Orleans and from there by steamer across the Gulf of Mexico to the mouth of the Rio Grande where they arrived on March 13 - an odd overland route dictated by Webb a veteran of the Mexican-American War. There disaster struck. A dozen men died of cholera the company's money was stolen and leadership conflict led Webb to leave the company with a dozen followers. Some of the remaining stalwarts including Haven followed Audubon onward trekking for seven months through Mexico and Arizona the survivors finally reaching San Diego in November. Some then took a boat to San Francisco; others continued overland to the gold fields. As meticulously recorded by Audubon a naturalist and painter in his own right the entire venture has gone down in history as "one of the most poorly-planned" Forty-Niner expeditions "on record." Haven though nearly dying en route was one of the fortunate few who "made it to California." An appealing note dated in the famous year of the California Gold Rush that eerily anticipates the dangers inherent in overland travel in America in the 19th century. unknown books

SCARCE. Very Good. The California Landmarks and Historical Records Bureau Inc. was incorporated in 1931 as a California non-profit organization. Its purpose was to gain legislative and public support to preserve "the romance" of California by passing laws for historic preservation and marking of historic landmarks. It hired newspapermen Sherman Danby who signed Sonya Doud's certificate of membership and Frederic N. Shovey as Director and Publicity Directors respectively. It was headquartered in Sacramento but its Southern California Office was in the Douglas Building in Los Angeles; it began by organizing prominent women in Southern California and then made an organizing tour of the state in 1932. One of its benefits of membership is this volume extolling the Romance of El Camino Real with its pictures of the California Missions. The Bureau actually assumed the care of several missions and in 1933 was able to secure Federal Assistance in reconstructing certain missions when the National Director of Work Relief and Special Projects Jacob Baker authorized relief labor to be used in Mission reconstruction. 1890813Madera Ca 1890. Very good. Broadside 16.5 x 9.5 inches. Horizontal fold at center. A few very short closed tears at top edge. Even tanning; a couple of faint fox marks. A scarce broadside advertisement for a land sale north of Fresno during the late 19th century. The Bank of Madera went into liquidation in 1897. Pacific Bank to whom the local bank owed a good deal of money apparently took control of its real estate assets and promoted their fire sale via this illustrated broadside. The advertisement contains a plat map and table of available lots and states that "This land is situated about 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Madera is all under irrigation and is as good soil and there is in the County of Madera." Additional text promotes other available lots and emphasizes the low prices for which all are available. The sale was placed in the hands of the local attorney Robert Hargrove who according to a contemporary state report on recent bank failures was also one of the principal shareholders and president of the bank. We locate only one copy of this broadside at Berkeley. unknown books
18891212San Francisco: Theatrical Publishing Co 1889. Very good. Broadside 17 x 6 inches. Previously folded. Small closed tear at top edge. Even tanning. An attractive broadside advertisement for entertainments at a downtown San Francisco theater in 1889. The Wigwam Theater was built in 1884 on the corner of Stockton and Geary Streets as a headquarters and event space for the presidential campaign of the Blaine and Logan Republican ticket. After Blaine lost the election to Grover Cleveland the Republican party leased the brick and sheet iron building to an Austrian immigrant named Gustav Walter who operated it first as a beer hall and then turned it into a venue for variety and vaudeville acts in the late 1880s. The present broadside promotes a slate of acts to be performed on March 11 1889 that range from vaudevillians and sketch comedians to acrobats and prestidigitators. With three lively woodcuts of actors and printed in a variety of types. We locate a portfolio of promotional material for the Wigwam at the Bancroft Library but no other records. 1918672San Francisco 1918. Very good. 3551pp. Narrow octavo. Original red cloth front board lettered in black. Moderate wear at spine extremities and corners; front hinge loosening. Light tanning. This book was published under the provisions of the Hide and Brand Law sponsored by the cattlemen of California in an attempt to "protect breeders and growers of cattle from theft." and allow for registrations and other protections. For two years it was administered by the Cattle Protection Board established in 1917 and then abolished in 1919. Cattle Protection Service thereafter became a part of the Department of Food & Agriculture. This manual contains thousands of registered brands and ear marks with an extensive index. It also prints the relevant sections of the Hide and Brand Law with its own index and synopsis and a list of licensed cattle slaughterers organized by county. A fascinating compendium for the early 20th-century California cattle business. Adams Rampaging Herd 396. unknown books

18891461Penryn Ca 1889. About very good. Broadside 9 x 6.75 inches. Trimmed unevenly corners clipped lightly tanned. Contemporary pencil notation at bottom of sheet. Broadside advertising a reward for the arrest of Henry Kaiser for the abduction of Miss Amy Douglas taken from the little town of Penryn in Placer County on Sunday June 2 1889. Kaiser is described as "aged 47 years height about 5 ft. 10 1-2 inches brown hair blue eyes brown light moustache cut square slightly stooped shouldered plays violin carried with him a violin and black satchel." Miss Douglas is described as well: "aged 14 years about 5 ft. 1 1-2 or 2 in. high large blue eyes light hair wears it in a braid and cut short in front and banged very awkward cannot read or write." The reward is offered by a J.H. Frost and a pencil note seems to indicate that he was a real estate and insurance agent. A newspaper article from the San Francisco Chronicle of June 24 1889 relates that the two eloped. Kaiser was a divorcé and the son of a well-known winemaker in the area. The two were located in Portland Oregon having unsuccessfully tried to gain a marriage license due to Amy's young age. Another article indicates that Amy fled cruelty at home her father having consented to her marrying Kaiser when she turned sixteen. In any case Kaiser was discharged from criminal prosecution having been found to have acted honorable with regards to the girl. An interesting story and the broadside is unrecorded. unknown books

A couple very minor separations and losses along map folds. Light tanning. A scarce pocket map of Kings County California south of Fresno published by Edward Denny & Co. in San Francisco. Printed in blue ink the map shows the county divided into plat townships and delineates railroads wagon roads canals streams and oil pipelines with a legend at left. Tulare Lake is prominently depicted at center interestingly with the original larger lake lines also marked. The contraction of the lake was due to the diversion of the streams and rivers that fed it for agricultural purposes. Prior to this development Tulare was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. Denny produced similar maps for a number of California counties during the early 20th century most now quite scarce. We locate only three copies at the Huntington Berkeley and UC Davis. Quarto. Original printed wrappers string- tied. Wrappers a bit soiled and with some light edgewear. Early ownership signature on front free endpaper. Quite clean internally. Very good overall. A scarce promotional for the community of San Carlos Park the present-day town of San Carlos in San Mateo County California. The panoramic photograph shows the lush hilly area and the large folding map shows lots offered for sale by the San Carlos Park Syndicate which produced this elaborate promotional work. The ability to live in a pleasant suburb and commute to San Francisco without crossing the Bay is highlighted yet one wonders what non- Spanish speaking prospective owners would have thought when they came to San Carlos and discovered that one of the main streets "Alameda de las Pulgas" translates to "Avenue of the Fleas." A surprisingly scarce map of the construction of Oroville dam and surrounding area in California. The dam is of recent fame for nearly failing in February 2017 when the spillways were on the verge of collapse leading to the evacuation of 188000 people. At the time of its construction in the 1960s it was one of the largest and most controversial water projects undertaken in the state. The topographical detail of the map is extremely fine. There were issues of the map from 1964 one copy listed in OCLC 1966 three copies located and this 1965 issue with "Revised July 1965" printed in the lower right corner with just one copy located at the University of California Riverside. 70639Very good. An album containing 24 silver prints measuring 6 x 4 inches many showing the popular Smith's automotive businesses in downtown San Diego California. The automotive service and parts company was founded and operated by Howard B. Smith known to many San Diegans at the time as "Service Smith". A native of Connecticut he trained as an engineer at U.C. Berkeley working his way through college in a repair shop and as a taxi driver. He moved to Michigan to work with the Chalmers Motor Company before relocating to San Diego in 1914 where he became an agent for cheap automobiles. In 1916 he opened the Smith automotive businesses and in 1918 the Owl Taxi with five Ford cabs. It would appear from the age of the automobiles in the photographs that the images date from the early 1920s. In 1921 Clemens W. Stose purchased Smith's Savoy Garage Smith's Motor Supply and Smith's Repair Shop. Laid into the album is a handwritten letter on Owl Taxi letterhead postmarked 1922. The album also contains early images of advertisements for tires and batteries along with a few other automotive-related businesses in the area. The album and photographs are in very good condition. The photographs are held in place with photo corners. The oblong black cloth album is bound with a string tie. unknown books
73242A collection of 1950s and '60s political buttons supporting causes and candidates ranging from the Vietnam anti-war movement to Ronald Reagan's campaign for the California governorship. This group consists of 56 unique metal pinback buttons which are housed in a period cardboard box. Most of the buttons are coated paper with metal backing; some are union printed.<br/><br/>Several of the political pins relate directly to Northern California. For example a button for the Free Speech F.S.M. is associated with the 1964-65 student protest at the University of California Berkeley the first mass act of civil disobedience on an American college campus in the 1960s.<br/><br/>The orange and black Viva Kennedy button in this collection is representative of clubs formed by Latinx supporters of John F. Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign. The Viva Kennedy clubs began in Texas as a forum for Mexican American veterans to rally support for equal rights and eventually spread to swing states with large Latinx populations like Arizona and California. They also promoted increased voter registration and political organization for the Latinx community.<br/><br/>Another button in this collection advocates "No on Prop 14". The Proposition 14 in question is the proposed amendment to the California Constitution which had it passed would have effectively allowed housing discrimination. The initiative was intended to counteract the effects of the Rumford Fair Housing Act which was passed by the California Legislature in 1963 to help end racial discrimination by property owners and landlords who refused to rent or sell their property to people based on ethnicity religion sex marital status physical handicap or familial status. It was drafted by William Byron Rumford the first African American from Northern California to serve in the state legislature.<br/><br/>Overall the buttons are in very good condition. unknown books
