"It is proposed that a COMPLETE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS be opened to the public on a fifty cent admission basis which is to be properly laid out as an attractive Zoological and Botanical Garden with the finest and largest private collection of animals birds and reptiles to be seen anywhere on the continent."<br/><br/>The advent of the motion picture industry in California had many wide-ranging ramifications on the business world and one was that it created a new market for firms who traditionally supplied animals to circuses and zoos both public and private owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst. <br/><br/>This archive is a report by the Investment Auditors of California for the Horne Corporation that was looking to expand by establishing a zoological garden in the environs of Los Angeles. The Horne Corporation was the largest and most successful of its type at the time apparently the only company in the US that could completely outfit a circus with both animals and show equipment. They were to purchase the Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio for $250000 and thereby sought to provide a similarly complete service to the film studios with both animals and suitable locations for film sets.<br/><br/>The head of the company I.S. Horne for whom this report was compiled commenced trading in animals from Kansas City MO around 1914. The range of animals at the their disposal included big game birds reptiles and many of the documents concern the prospect of importing reindeer from Alaska.<br/><br/>The material is held in a presentation album and includes the certificate of incorporation in Wilmington Delaware May 13 1929 as well as the by-laws of the corporation minutes of the first meeting the proposal for Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio and a balance sheet. At this stage the company had total assets of $57700 & liabilities of $625388.46; an enumeration of the various animals in inventory including wildebeest sables leopard lynx Rhodesian baboons bushbaby and a large aardvark.<br/><br/>Of real interest are the plans for the park including artist's impressions which would be furnished with circus attractions "Monkey Island" jungle setting for motion pictures and an acknowledgment that "before the introduction of the motion picture industry the art of showmanship was not quite so highly developed as it is today." In fact one of the first pictures they supplied animals for was - appropriately enough - Trader Horn which was nominated for the 1931 Academy Award for Best Picture. <br/><br/>On a more practical level there is a "Descriptive Classification of Principal Commercial Wild Animals" which lists 340 different animals in some details. There is also an account of hunting wild animals in East Africa as well as a section on animals that have been trained to hunt by man. Furthermore there is also much correspondence which provides much insight into the game industry its clients and the prospects for its future.<br/><br/>Horne's venture subsequently became known as the World Jungle Compound in Thousand Oaks California eventually being acquired by 20th Century Fox studios. Ring-bound flexible leather boards. Upper 1 1/2-inch portion of spine and front cover chipped away. Covers rubbed crude repairs to spine toning and minor wear to photographs. Very good. In a cloth box. An unusual album featuring boats and canoes manufactured by the King Boat Company of California. Many of the photographs are dated 1927 and the album serves not only as a visual catalogue of various boats available from the King Boat Company but also as a document of water travel in Alaska California and the Pacific Northwest in the 1920s. The canvas backing on the first and last images bears the inkstamped name of F.R. Frederick a distributor based in Boston. Whether this album was prepared by Frederick or by the King Boat Company is unclear. What is clear is that these are very interesting images of various King Boat Company boats and canoes in use. Nine are identified as having been photographed by "Lewis R. Freeman Noted Explorer and Writer for National Geographic Magazine on Thousand Mile Canadian Trip. Summer of 1927"; a tenth is an image of Freeman with an Arrow Boat. Freeman a noted traveler explorer and writer published over twenty books on his travels. Other images reveal "Arrow Model on Heart Lakes in the High Sierra - 11500 Feet Elevation. Colonel H.G. Thompson at the Oars"; "Boat owned by T. Wherry Taxidermist Victoria B.C. was built in 1893 and in service for over 34 years up to November 1927 on display in King Boat Company Factory Oakland California"; a couple images of canoes loaded on pack horses; several of Henry W. Partridge "Noted Packer" navigating the Salmon River in Idaho; images of boats in Alaska and the Yukon; and several others of boats on shore in use as shelters or otherwise employed. hardcover books
1940WRCAM55967Los Angeles: Japanese Photo Studio Association 1940. Panoramic photograph 10 x 24 3/4 inches. Minor wear vertical crease through image near the right edge. Very good. A striking panoramic photograph picturing the Japanese-American celebrants at the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Buddhist school at the Los Angeles branch of the Higashi Honganji Temple. The photograph is titled and dated in Japanese script; it relates the date of the celebration as the 13th 14th and 15th of September in the year 2600 after the birth of the Emperor Jimmu which is 1940. The photograph pictures a few hundred Issei and Nissei men women and children in a mixture of traditional Japanese gowns and caps and western suits and dresses. There are a few banners in the background relating to the temple and the celebration. The Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is still active in Los Angeles. <br> <br> The celebration depicted here came just two short years before the beginning of the Japanese-American internment period which triggered fundamental changes in the practice of the Buddhist faith in America among Japanese-American citizens. As a result of anti-Japanese sentiment in the early 1940s Buddhists sometimes changed the names of their churches to sound more patriotic. They began to meet on Sundays to emulate Christian worship while singing from new hymnals that echoed those found in Christian churches. Sects within the church were forced to worship together. And the swastika - a Buddhist symbol for thousands of years - was replaced by the dharma wheel. <br> <br> In addition to the faith itself Buddhists within the Japanese American community were particularly vulnerable during the internment period. The American government believed that Japanese-American Buddhists were more likely to support Imperial Japan than Japanese-American Christians or those of another faith. Sadly this also represented the majority of Japanese Americans since most were Buddhist in the first place. Further the FBI classified Buddhist priests as "known dangerous Group A1 suspects" and sought them out among the first groups to be imprisoned. Many Buddhist priests were whisked away to relocation centers even before Franklin Roosevelt's issuance of Executive Order 9066. <br> <br> We could locate no other copies of the present panoramic photograph in institutions or auction records. An important photographic record of a portion of the Japanese-American Buddhist community in Los Angeles just a short time before the internment period changed everything. Striking large panoramic photograph of San Francisco depicting the heart of the city a year after the Great Earthquake of 1906. Taken from Nob Hill one can see the Call Building in the immediate right foreground cable cars running busily down Market Street in front of it. In the direct center of the photo in the far distance one can see the spire of the Ferry Building with Russian and Telegraph Hills off to the left in the distance. a swathe of ruined landscape greets the viewer though with a number of cranes and buildings under construction. OCLC indicates Yale has a similarly-large panoramic image of San Francisco by Waters taken in 1906 just before to the fire. 1929651Placerville Ca 1929. Very good. Five blueprints measuring from approximately 24 x 34 to 29 x 41 inches. Tipped onto modern cardboard backing at left edge overlaid with brown paper. Light wear a couple of archival repairs at edges. Contemporary blind stamps. A group five large and fascinating blueprints that delineate proposed modifications to the Weber Dam near Placerville California that were carried out in 1930. The Dam was originally built in 1922 and 1923 without steel reinforcement and as a result improvements have been required periodically from its completion up to the present day. The designs present here outline the first set of such improvements overseen by an engineer named George W. Hawley in 1929 and 1930. These include the construction of new tunnels outlets gates and spillways and also include detailed topographical charts of the area surrounding the dam. The blueprints which were intended to accompany an engineer's report on the project are as follows: 1 Contour Map Showing Plan & Section of Dam and Location of Supply Tunnel & Wasteway. 2 Outlet Structures Showing Tunnel and Shaft Control Works & Appurtenances. 3 Details of Spillway. 4 Details of Tunnel Valves & Controls. 5 Contour Map of Borrow Area for Weber Creek Dam. The dam and the reservoir that it created managed by the El Dorado Irrigation District provide vital power and water services to area agriculture. The present plans comprise an important document of the early upkeep and development of the structure. unknown books

Photos in corner mounts most with manuscript captions on album leaves. Later contemporary ownership inscription on front board. This photo album provides an excellent visual record of the life and work of Joseph Grosjean a member of Civilian Conservation Corps Company No. 569. This unit commanded by Lt. Roy Strange was the first CCC Company sent to Camp Horse Heaven in Coeur d'Alene in 1934 where they were assigned to road construction and control of "Blister Rust" tree fungus important work ordered by the U.S. Forest Service in order to prevent the loss of white pine forests in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The photos here show many of the participants the camp site the ruggedness of the surroundings; a young Grosjean who was then eighteen years old is pictured in many of the shots. Other photos show activities such as clearing brush on Hog Lake Road and installing a gate and other roadwork on Thomas Mountain near present day Kachess Dam in Washington. <br/><br/>In 1935 Grosjean moved to work details that were based out of Camp Kenworthy and Keen Camp both near Hemet California although there is no indication that he was transferred to another unit. In the San Jacinto Valley his work including brush clearing maintaining fire breaks and several landscaping and irrigation projects. His unit apparently also had more time for and access to leisure activities while in California as there are a couple shots of CCC camp members "skiing in sunny California" and another snapshot of "Jean Harlow's house." Overall a fine document of Civilian Conservation Corps life in the somewhat divergent locales of Northern Idaho and Southern California. unknown books
19311520Fresno: Frank Kamiyama 1931. Near fine. Silver gelatin photograph 10 x 46 inches. Minor wear and soiling. Image strong and crisp. A handsome panoramic photograph by Japanese-American photographer Frank Kamiyama depicting the worshippers for the service to reinstate the Buddha's statue in the temple. The photo shows a large group of Japanese Americans assembled on the street in front of a bungalow-style building whose porch is draped with large curtains. The children who line the front row are in ceremonial and traditional costume; behind them at the center are three men wearing stoles of office; a band stands at the right end armed with brass and wind instruments; several spectators appear at the left edge of the image some in parked cars waiting to drive through the street. Most of the worshippers are women.Panoramic photographs such as this one were often taken to commemorate important events or celebrations and were particularly popular from the 1920s through the 1940s. Frank Kamiyama 1886-1974 was a Japanese-American photographer with a studio located on Tulare Street in Fresno. He was an important documentarian of the Japanese community in Fresno and the surrounding area. Given the modest nature of the temple here we presume this image to have been taken in an outlying community. Frank Kamiyama unknown books
1906WRCAM55775Pasadena Los Angeles Long Beach and elsewhere described below 1906. 103 silver gelatin photographs from 1 1/4 x 1 to 4 3/4 x 5 inches mounted to album leaves. Oblong octavo album. Limp textured calf. Some wear and rubbing. One or two smudges to captions photographs in excellent condition overall. Very good. An engaging and remarkably well-preserved album recording over a year in the life of a large and jovial Church of the Brethren family from Pasadena. Most photos are captioned in white pencil often with location and date but rarely identifying the people photographed; some photos also include a date stamp including month and day. <br> <br> Although the identity of the skilled amateur photographer is not revealed the families featured appear to be part of one of the large migrations of the Brethren to Southern California. In search of cheap fertile land the Brethren typically migrated west in groups by which they could more easily hold on to their faith and lifestyle while at the same time winning converts by demonstrating their prosperous communities and godly lives. One of the families may be the Snyders as two photos of a house labeled "752 Hull St. Pasadena" matches the address of one J.S. Snyder in THE BRETHREN FAMILY ALMANAC for 1908. There is also a photo labeled "Watkins Family at 122 N. Hudson" and while that address is not found in the ALMANAC there is a T.J. Watkins listed with a post office box in Los Angeles. <br> <br> The album follows the family on an extensive tour of Southern California - from the mountains to the beach to the desert. The album begins with a number of photos of the extended family in various poses groupings and settings around a house in Pasadena. Some of the family group photos are repeated shots with only minor changes in composition. <br> <br> The tour begins with a Fourth of July picnic in Eaton Canyon in the foothills just above Pasadena; views of and from Mt. Wilson including a man riding a burro; the Pasadena Library; San Gabriel Mission; Hotel Green Pasadena; Pasadena High School at Euclid and Sierra Madre; and the train station at Lordsburg a Brethren settlement now La Verne. Interspersed are six photos of floats in the 1906 Tournament of Roses Parade. There are also views of the Salt Lake Railroad Station and other scenes of downtown Long Beach including the Bath House; a shack near Redlands; the Riverside Cactus Garden; a bridge over Devil's Gate Reservoir; the hotels Raymond and Maryland both in Pasadena; the Ocean Park Bath House on Christmas Day 1905; Port Los Angeles Railway Station; the First Brethren Church in Los Angeles and the Baptist Brethren Church on Hull Street in Pasadena. There are also several photos of the grand houses on Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena. <br> <br> An exceptional vernacular photograph album of Southern California. unknown books

Most photos identified with captions. As engaging a photographic document of mid-century forestry as one is likely to find following the Rodgers Brothers trucking company in their logging trips through Humboldt and Eureka counties. With images of accidents company trucks and machines the cutting and processing of giant redwoods drivers posed in front of their trucks and more. The deadpan captions "THIS ONE GOT HIT BY A TRAIN" "THESE ARE PRIVATE ROAD TRUCKS AT BIG LAGOON" "THIS ONE WENT THROUGH THE BRIDGE" etc. add to the visual appeal. Redwood logging in Humboldt Count reached its apex around this time which preceded the establishment and expansion of Redwood National Park. Light wear to covers. Images crisp and clear. Many images with typed captions. A wonderful photo album documenting road trips taken in the Eastern Sierra and western Nevada in the area in and around Owens Valley. The photographer and his friends explored numerous mines and mining towns in the region braving the desert in their car. The album winds from Owen's Lake to the National Soda Products Company and the Estelle Mine to the tiny town of Keeler where they celebrated Easter. They continue on to the mining camps of Panamint City and Ballarat both now ghost towns. There are photographs of the town of Lone Pine the Cerro Gordo Mine Darwin and in Nevada the towns of Lida and Goldfield. They take an extended trek through Big Pine California staying in Glacier Lodge Canyon and spend time in Onion Valley. There is also a lengthy series of photographs taken out at Lone Pine California documenting the Universal Pictures film "Oh Promise Me" with images of the actors and sets and crew. An altogether fascinating album documenting the region of the Eastern Sierra and Owens Valley. unknown books

Still in very good condition. A handsome group photograph memorializing the attendees of the 1952 annual conference of the Northern California Young Buddhist League. The photograph depicts over 200 finely-dressed Japanese-American men and women and even a few Anglo Americans organized by region which are indicated by printed signs. The delegates to the conference came from Lodi Placer Marysville Sacramento Delta Stockton and Florin. A sign hanging on a building behind the delegates reads "Greetings Busseis" a general term for Buddhist youth. <br> <br> Interestingly 1952 was the year that several chapters of Young Buddhists and other Japanese American mutual aid societies and support groups successfully implemented several changes to Japanese immigration policies brought about by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 the McCarran-Walter Act. While this law still provided for some discriminatory policies it also allowed a new path to citizenship for most Asian Americans. Groups such as the Northern California Young Buddhist League helped many Japanese-American Issei attain citizenship previously forbidden by U.S. immigration law. <br> <br> A rare image with no copies reported in OCLC. unknown books

The information is all keyed to the various streetcar lines indicating which lines are most convenient to which hotels etc. With information on all the major sights and municipal attractions as well as hotels banks theatres etc. A listing of the routes of each streetcar line occupies the final two pages. The map shows the city and county of San Francisco with the streetcar lines demarcated in red. A rare survival -- we find one copy of this edition in OCLC at the Milwaukee County Library with one or two copies of other editions located at UC Berkeley the New York Public Library California Historical and the Marin County Library. This is the smaller of two versions of this map; this one was most likely for pocket or portable use; the other larger version for display on a wall. OCLC records one copy of this version CHS and two of the larger version Bancroft and UC Davis. A few pencil notations probably by a realtor or planner; creased with some minor wear; a little browning at the edges; in very good condition. Cadastral real estate map 29.2 x 27.4 cm gray and green color outlining. A rare real estate map of the residential neighborhood of St. Francis Wood in its infancy across Portola Avenue from the West Portal neighborhood in San Francisco's Sunset District. San Francisco west of the Twin Peaks hills was mostly undeveloped by 1915 but a tunnel that would connect by train this remote part of the city with the neighborhoods closer to downtown was under construction and developers knew that once that was completed the areas west of Twin Peaks would be ripe for development. The San Francisco firm of Mason-McDuffie engaged the services of the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline Mass and famed California architect John Galen Howard to plan and design what would become one of San Francisco's most elegant residential neighborhoods. From the inception all utility lines were to be underground no apartment buildings were allowed and there were restrictions on the design and quality of construction. Faint foxing at left edge; light tanning. A rare 1908 map of San Francisco San Mateo and the surrounding Bay Area by late 19th- and early 20th-century California cartographers Punnett Brothers. The upper portion of the map depicts the Bay with San Francisco and San Mateo County outlined in pink and pale green respectively. The lower half of the map consists of the southern half of San Mateo County and the area below the bay much of which makes up today's Silicon Valley. Most of this section of the map as well as the areas east of Berkeley Oakland and San Lorenzo are platted. The map is also marked with significant geographical features as well as roads and railways and shows the locations of the many ranchos still extant in the region during this period. An interesting and attractive land map for the Bay Area and the surrounding region during the early 1900s. We locate only one copy at Berkeley. Punnett Brothers unknown books
195047835Los Angeles: Helen of California 1950. 4to 42 leaves mostly printed on rectos only on various color paper each with a fashion design by "Helen" and each with accompanying text; full-page "fabric story" incorporporating a printed tree on which are applied various cool woolen samples in the shape of hearts and a bow-tie 1 thumnail-size sample missing; one mounted illustration within a hand-applied frame and another cut-out possibly not original mimicking one of the designs; comb-bound in original green suede textured wrappers printed in red and accompanied by 3 sample cards of "color harmonies" with 12 14 and 18 mounted color samples of woolen yarn; all in all very good. Wonderful fashion catalogue filled with designs by "Helen of California" and based on the 14th century designs of Marco Polo. The designer details how her Fall 1950 Marco Polo fashions emphasize the Basic Dress Plus with her designs accentuating a slim straight silhouette while highlighting ajn Oriental line inthe shoulder a mandarin collar pagoda peplum Hindu sari and other elements borrowed from descriptions of costume made by Marco Polo. These include fashions in wool such as the Aladdin a worsted wool spiked with silk jacquard taffeta dress; the Siamese Dancer dress of worsted wool crepe with long and pointed sleeves a stiletto slim skirt and turned-back shoulder flanges; the Saracen a long side-swept silhouette one-piece with a velvet hat and many others. Gudgell worked as a fashion and costume designer in L.A. in the 1930s moved to Minneapolis during World War II and then returned to the L.A. area. Her "Helen of California" label was popular until the endof the 1950s. The color wool yarn sample cards and harmony chart offer an excellent example of the color palate balance intended. <br/><br/> Helen of California unknown books

A rare pocket map of Lake County California published by Edward Denny in 1904. The map is printed in blue ink and is divided into townships with Guenoc and Gallayomi Ranchos identified near the foot of the map area and major roads through the county delineated. Clear Lake the county's namesake is prominently depicted at center and numerous springs are located and named in its vicinity. The present edition of this map is the first with revised editions published in 1907 and 1910. All are quite rare but the 1904 edition is particularly so with only one copy located by OCLC at the Bancroft Library. Edward Denny & Co unknown books

Manuscript notations light soiling. Typescript report by mining engineer Samuel Storrow supplemented with eleven original photographs. Storrow 1865-1939 was the manager of the Goldstone Mining Company of Delaware and he reports here on work conducted about thirty-five miles north of Barstow California describing the sinking of a mining shaft and other related operations as well as the quality of ore discovered. He also comments on some of the difficulties with the operation: "The unusual labor conditions brought about by shortage of labor and by serious labor disturbances in the nearby Arizona mines and then an additional shortage of labor due to war conditions rendered the work more expensive than had been anticipated; and the same causes have made it difficult at times to obtain the necessary materials promptly but on the whole the work has been prosecuted steadily and within the estimates previously prepared." Additionally there is mention of the assessment and exploration of the "Big Drum group the Lucky Find group and the Golden State group" which also operated in the area. The report concludes with Storrow's recommendation to continue with the mining program developed by the company and with a detailed financial report. The photographs all have typed captions and depict the area around the mine as well as its machinery and buildings.<br/><br/>Gold was reportedly discovered at Goldstone as early as the 1880s. With the discovery in 1915 of an especially productive claim at Redfield prospectors began to flood into the area. By February 1917 a boomtown had emerged and the Goldstone Mining Company had established a mill. Rather unexpectedly and inexplicably however prospecting declined precipitously in 1917 and by August 1918 the post office established for the town closed its doors. Today Goldstone is regarded as the last in a series of boomtown gold rushes that began around 1906 with the discoveries in Goldfield Nevada. unknown books

Map highlighting lots in the city Pacific Grove on the Monterey peninsula owned by the Del Monte Properties Co. and to be sold by auctioneers Barry & Austin with no reserve. The text printed on panels on the verso highlights this as a brilliant investment opportunity particularly targeting the concept of the vacation rental: "The country today is on the eve of tremendous prosperity and every city large or small will naturally feel the effect. Keep in mind that real estate is the safest and soundest investment you can possibly make. . Buy a lot in Pacific Grove at this sacrifice sale build a small bungalow live in it when you want to and rent the bungalow the rest of the year at a rental which will give you the use of the house free." Interestingly the text notes that Liberty Bonds will be accepted at par value as forms of payment. The map shows lots for auction in red with a tidy block fronting Monterey Bay. An attractive map depicting the post-war real estate boom in California leading into the Roaring 20s. 19331962Long Beach Ca 1933. Very good plus. Forty silver gelatin photographs. Twenty-six mounted on leaves with typed captions the remainder loose but captioned in negative. Images 3.5 x 5.75 inches and 3.5 x 4.5 inches. Images crisp and clean mounting leaves a bit rumpled with light wear. Small collection of images documenting the Long Beach Earthquake of May 10 1933. The images mounted to sheets are numbered and captioned in typescript with the heading "Earthquake Damage - Long Beach and Vicinity. March 14 1933". They provide a visual survey of the damage to major sites around Los Angeles and Compton such as the Masonic Temple the Dominguez Sub-station the Security First National Bank in Compton buildings along East Compton Boulevard and several of the local schools. The loose photos all show damage in Long Beach itself including the Seaside Hospital the Catholic Church the Imperial Theatre schools and an image captioned "Feeding refugees at Lincoln Park - Long Beach Cal."<br/><br/>The Long Beach Earthquake occurred just before 6 o'clock in the morning and was a magnitude 6.4 killing more than 100 people. The epicenter was offshore south of Los Angeles with much of the damage limited to Long Beach but also spreading north into southern L.A. It is notable that many of the images here document school buildings as more than 200 schools were damaged in the event. This highlighted a need for earthquake-proof construction in school buildings where the death toll would have been much higher had the earthquake struck during school hours and the legislature passed the Field Act on April 10th as a result. This article which is illustrated describes work on the canal and the ways in which it will benefit the region's farmers with irrigation. 1921802Colusa Ca. 1921. About very good. 8pp. Pictorial self wrappers stapled. Light wear and creasing; a few short closed tears at wrapper edges. Contemporary ownership inscription on front wrap. Even tanning. A scarce promotional for the Young Oil Company and its development of an apparently lucrative oil strike at Bear Creek in Colusa County during 1921. The pamphlet prints a story first published in the local Colusa Sun newspaper which documents history of oil production at the site chronicles the purchase of the lease by Young Oil in 1915 and relates positive comments from several contemporary geologists' reports that convinced the company to significantly increase its investment and work on the property including the imminent arrival of an industrial drilling rig from Texas. The remainder of the text publishes a letter from a Sacramento oil man William Babcock which describes the operation as "The best oil venture that I know of -- in fact it looks so good to me that while I have for all intents and purposes retired from active participation in the development of the oil business I shall in this case make an exception." The final leaf prints an enjoinder from the company to "Buy all the Young Oil Company stock you can afford" and gives the organizational information of the firm.
