Vignette drawing of the inn p. 1. 18" x 11-7/8" <br/><br/>Hailing from the 19th C the modern history of the Inn began "in 1939 when Danish immigrant Irl Hinrichsen acquired the Inn. With the help of his sons he remodeled the Inn discontinued use of the upstairs hotel rooms and renamed it the Sycamore Inn. The Hinrichsen family Irl and later his son Vern and his family made the Sycamore Inn into one of the prime eateries of the Inland Empire. That old dirt road that fronted the Inn became the fabled Route 66 the primary route from points east to the Pacific Ocean. During those colorful years of the 30's 40's 50's and 60's before freeways the Inn hosted the rich and famous.movie stars and notables both the famous and the infamous en route to Las Vegas and Palm Springs. The Inn is rich with folklore. Legend has it that both Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short the "Black Dahlia" dined at the Sycamore in the weeks before their untimely demise." 1970141060San Francisco: University of California Berkley Museum 1970. Original poster for one of the most important events in the Bay Area of California in 1970 a performance by Steve Reich to celebrate the opening of the UC Berkeley Art Museum. With a striking triangular design mounted as issued with a label on the verso crediting the Richell Gallery of Houston Texas for the archival framing. <br/><br/>The museum was founded in 1963 after a donation was made to the university from artist and teacher Hans Hofmann of forty-five paintings plus $250000. A competition to design the building was announced in 1964 and the museum opened in 1970. In 1966 the Pacific Film Archive was founded and began screenings in 1966. Today the museum continues to be a great success and operates under the name of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive or BAM/PFA. <br/><br/>The performance for the opening included four early works by Reich: "Four Organs" "My Name Is" "Piano Phase" and "Phase Patterns." The event marked an important moment in San Francisco Bay Area new music history with the triumphant return to the East Bay by Reich who studied at Mills College with Luciano Berio and who performed the 1964 world premiere of Terry Riley's now-legendary work "In C" at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. <br/><br/>Three sided poster each side measuring 26.3 inches mounted as issued. 1896GG01662Mt. Tamalpais: c. 1896-98. 1896. 29.2 x 22.5 cm. Albumen photo mounted on card. Inscribed "On Mt. Tamalpais across the bay from San Francisco. C.J.S. with the RR Commissioners." Very good. Group Portrait of about 43 persons possibly tourists accompanied by the Railroad Commissioners including 2 women plus on the left two open railway cars filled with people. This photograph was taken at the opening of the route which was in 1896. The railroad commissioners at the time were H.M. La Rue James I. Stanton and William R. Clark. 40 men 2 women and 1 young man all well-dressed stand and sit on a sunlit platform beside the railway. Inside the railcars additional women and children are obscured by shadows. 10 show a badge or citation! on their coats – not known what these represent. "The Mill Valley railroad operated from about 1896 to 1930. It included about 8.2 miles of winding track and was advertised as "the crookedest railroad in the world."" – Adrian Rodriguez Marin Independent Journal 03/17/2018. marinij. Note: Frank Ransome was the official photographer for the railroad nearly his whole life. He signed his work on the verso not viewed on this piece mounted on cardboard but additionally this does not appear to be like any of his known work as judged by Tamalpais railroad historian Fred Runner. Runner also notes traces of the weather station built in 1898 but cannot be viewed here as the summit is not shown. Either the image is 'opening day' with a group including the RR Commissioners or it is 2 years later and the entire group is made up of tourists enjoying the ride – but this does not explain the inscription alluding to the presence of the RR Commissioners appointed by the state. "Important groups came to Tamalpais. William Kent brought groups of congressmen to Tamalpais to show them what a public nature park might be. Muir Woods was his creation and he was an important co-author of the "Organic Act" that created the National Park Service in 1916 to fund run and manage the National Parks of America." – Correspondence with Runner.
