1946503San Francisco 1946. Very good plus. Printed map 12.75 x 21.25 inches. Previously folded. Very light wear. A scarce post-World War II cadastral map that depicts lots in subdivisions of San Carlos California north of Redwood City. The developer of these "Devonshire Properties" Clyde Menke was involved in several legal disputes over the rights to this area but much of what was designed for this neighborhood of San Carlos is still present today. Shaded areas of this "Sales Map No. 17" for the area denote sold lots but much of property was still available. An interesting look at post-war development in the Bay Area; not in OCLC. unknown books

1952WRCAM56683N.p. likely Sacramento 1952. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph 8 x 33 3/4 inches. Short closed tear and mild crease near upper left corner slight silvering to image. Still in very good condition. A handsome group photograph memorializing the attendees of the 1952 annual conference of the Northern California Young Buddhist League. The photograph depicts over 200 finely-dressed Japanese-American men and women and even a few Anglo Americans organized by region which are indicated by printed signs. The delegates to the conference came from Lodi Placer Marysville Sacramento Delta Stockton and Florin. A sign hanging on a building behind the delegates reads "Greetings Busseis" a general term for Buddhist youth. <br> <br> Interestingly 1952 was the year that several chapters of Young Buddhists and other Japanese American mutual aid societies and support groups successfully implemented several changes to Japanese immigration policies brought about by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 the McCarran-Walter Act. While this law still provided for some discriminatory policies it also allowed a new path to citizenship for most Asian Americans. Groups such as the Northern California Young Buddhist League helped many Japanese-American Issei attain citizenship previously forbidden by U.S. immigration law. <br> <br> A rare image with no copies reported in OCLC. unknown books

Binding styles and paginations vary: some legal buckram others sheep; some with morocco spine labels others issued without spine labels. Several volumes include folding tables. The majority have the usual institutional marks which are rarely obtrusive. Occasional text spotting and light wear but generally clean and Very Good.<br/><br/> The stated printing locations are San Jose and San Francisco for the first two Sessions but these were actually printed in New York. The third and fourth Sessions were printed in San Francisco the others in Sacramento. <br/> These volumes present the earliest legal history of the State of California. The First Session includes not only the Statutes enacted but the Treaty of Peace with Mexico and documents supplementary thereto the 1849 California Constitution the U.S. Constitution with amendments and other foundation enactments. Joint Resolutions Index Table of Contents for each Session are printed along with the Laws. The 1852 and 1853 volumes are evidently rare. The Statutes deal with all the significant events of that interesting ten-year period: the settlement of the State the development of infrastructure and unfolding of commercial life the multiple social and political institutions the Gold Rush immigration the political strife that engulfed the Nation and all other aspects of early Statehood. <br/>FIRST EDITIONS. Rare complete "day after" newspaper account of the damage done to Santa Rosa by the devastating earthquake of April 18 1906. Unlike San Francisco where fires ultimately did most of the damage in Santa Rosa most of the destruction was done by the tremor itself leaving most of the business section in ruin. The volume also provides lurid accounts of various crimes committed including lynchings robberies and murders as well as of natural disasters and mining accidents. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the county's mining history and its geology as well as its the promotion of its agricultural resources. Includes a portrait and brief biography of Samuel Clemens Mark Twain who spent time around the mines in California as a reporter during the Civil War and apparently stayed in Tuolumne County during the winter of 1864-65 where he wrote "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
