Pacific provided the West Coast with its first medical school in 1858 which later became part of Stanford and today is California Pacific Medical Center. The volume was a fund-raising effort: "The principal reason that these stories have been gathered together and given to the public is to start a fund wherewith to erect a fountain on the Campus of the University of California to be in harmony with the great Hearst architectural plan."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt with title and a scene of a rolling hill with trees on it. The first photograph captures a bearded man atop a stump peering in the forest with sunlight pouring through a stand of redwoods. The second shows redwood rounds loaded on a train car with "Exelsior Redwood Co. Eureka Cal." etched into the negative. All of the train workers are posed for the photograph along with several men and a young girl in the background. A well-preserved pair of images in very good condition with good contrast and some wear and toning to mounts. unknown books

An early and rare promotional for Tulare County California located just south of Fresno. The county was then - and is still now - an important agricultural region recognition of which can be found in the title of this work. The agricultural potential of the county is stressed with descriptions of soil climate and irrigation methods. "First class land" is described as almost a "drug on the market" due to its plentifulness. The final page contains listings by land merchant Samuel Richardson who was selling lots from twenty to eight hundred acres in size. Not in Rocq.
