Printed on a sheet of green paper measuring 351â„4 x 161â„2 inches folding into twenty-four panels. In a half morocco and cloth folding box spine gilt. Two ink stamps of U.S. Geological Survey Library on front panel. A bit of wear at the edges and folds. One panel with a neat closed tear halfway across but with no loss. Overall very good. Five photographically-reproduced illustrations and two maps. Printed on a sheet of green paper measuring 351â„4 x 161â„2 inches folding into twenty-four panels. A fact-filled promotional encouraging emigration to and investment in Baja California. The International Land Company of Mexico issued several similar pamphlets on Baja in the mid-to-late 1880s see Barrett 1303-1307 but the present example is the most elaborate in format having been printed on a single large sheet folded into twenty-four panels with text printed in varying orientations. The agricultural opportunities are described at great length as are the qualities of the city of Ensenada. The illustrations show orange groves oaks banana plants and olive trees and the map shows the Peninsula down to the twenty-eighth parallel. One paragraph discusses the fine quality honey produced in the region. Scarce. An autograph letter signed “H B Lehman†to his brother: “…they complain of not having received any letters from me since I left home the fault is not mine for I have written several out for the last three years have not been able to write on account of having lost William’s last letter in which he says that he had moved into another house…have been doing rather bad for the last two years but now have hopes of doing better…Uncle Robert’s daughter Yves was married to a young man named Jose…I can see no motive for not maintaining correspondence with you as I say above I have answered all the letters…â€. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition. ALS. 2pg. 5†x 8â€. February 17 1861. Yuba County. An autograph letter signed “Saml R. Lehman†to Bill: “…Harriet was much pleased with her gift and prizes it very highly she had deputed me to express her thanks as she had put off writing till next time. I believe that my letters are now coming regularly…We are all well here and there is nothing much for me to write. I have commenced farming – I have done some plowing and put in some grain – have commenced a small garden and am about to put out a few fruit trees. Some of these days I may write you my experience in this to me new business – it may amuse you. You probably think that those pictures will never come – have a little patience. They are not taken yet but will be some day and in due course of time you will receive them. I am very slow about it but you can be satisfied that I am sure…â€. An autograph letter signed “Ramon Hill†to Joe: “…I am very happy to hear that you are now improving in health and hope you may always be blessed with good health. It is a particular gift and not granted by Divine Providence to all alike…It makes my heart ache to mention the civil discord and disgrace that has spread over our beloved country for so many years the example of peace and prosperity of every other notice. But what must we do set down and cry for the sins of our brethren. Yes it is a fearful time to handle a horrible spectacle to behold. Were that I was not in the States long before this I should be among the ranks of those blessed with defending the most sacred of causes and shedding their blood for the atonement…â€. Folio 31 cm 12.5". 1 2 3 pp. <br><br>Each facsimile has this note on it: "Photographed from the original preserved in the 'Archivo General de Indias' de Sevilla under Royal Order dated Madrid December 26th 1883 for Aldoph Sutro Esq. of San Francisco California" and the typographic imprint above.<br>Â Â Â Â One is a letter of Junipero Serra dated Monterey 7 October 1779 reporting that he has made a copy of Fr. Crespi's diary and is sending it via the ship that has just arrived; a second Serra letter dated Monterey 9 September 1779 reports on the various missions and states that he hopes to establish one in San Francisco. The third letter is by Sebastian Vizcaino dated Monterey 8 December 1602 reporting on his voyage of discovery along the California coast.<br>Â Â Â Â The facsimiles are on laid paper and in sepia ink and are great replicas of the originals with a great backstory as to their creation.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Adolph Sutro; later for sale by E. Fox a major figure in the California Democratic Party and political boss of Sacramento was nominated for the position of state Postmaster in 1913. This drew a slew of objections scores of which are printed here from those who saw him as corrupt a "corporation tool" of the Southern Pacific Railroad on the take from gamblers and criminals and worse. A promotional book not a cookbook for California Fig Syrup a patent medicine employed as a laxative. Also called Elixir of Senna the concoction had no figs in it whatsoever. This booklet seeks to tie the "purity" and "excellence" of the product to similar qualities which at the time were seen by the public to reside in the State of California. And so the book is illustrated with images of notable scenery of the state including San Francisco's Cliff House Yosemite Santa Barbara and other popular sites.
