Title page printed in red and black. FIRST EDITION. A handsome promotional book about the vanilla plant and vanilla extract sold by the Joseph Burnett Company commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm and promoting Burnett's Vanilla Extract. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes. Internally fresh clean and sound. Original publisher's beige and green paper-covered boards titled and decorated in green and black on the front panel; no title to spine. Fine and rare thus. Instructions for ordering followed by illustrations of and pricing for various products to include crests letters rosettes hames terrets buckles chains links hooks etc. Born in New Brunswick Joseph Colgan came to Boston as a young boy where he learned and perfected his trade under Henry Cross father of Mark Cross the owner of America's first luxury leather goods company. Colgan established himself in business at Sudbury Street in 1850 remaining at that address throughout his career. He became involved in the manufacture of military and foremen's equipment fancy saddlery and leather specialties. Page edges lightly soiled throughout due to handling; title page with 1/4" x 1" chip missing to bottom edge and with creasing to bottom corner along with text separating from wrappers but still holding. Wrappers with creasing to top and bottom corners. Good. Privately printed, 1893. hardcover
188510250Boston: Kiley Printer 7 Spring Lane 1885. Bi-fold menu 13.5 x 12 cm. 4 pages. Illustrated. Engraved menu for a banquet given for Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks former Senator from and Governor of Indiana. Hendricks was the 21st Vice President lasting a mere 8 months in office from March 4th through November 25th 1885. This dinner was given by the Bay State Club at the famous Parker House. In the few short months he had left Hendricks was to give a controversial speech in support of Irish independence and head of the Boston machine politician Martin Lomasney was to name the Hendricks Club after him. The light tan card stock boards sport a gilt-edged circular medallion with an engraving of the Vice President. The card is lightly dusty and with the slightest of abrasions at the corners. One medium-sized file box containing approximately six hundred twenty-five items including: commercial brochures 121 samples 11 posters 3 typed letters signed/TLS 304 autograph letters signed/ALS 149 postcards & telegrams 29 and periodicals 5. The commercial or trade brochures are mostly small booklets bi-folds and tri-folds graphically illustrated with images of the equipment on offer and frequently printed in two colors or in duotone. A small but deeply engaging archive depicting the business activities of the Boston Massachusetts kitchen equipment supply firm W.H. Davenhall. The supply company serviced businesses with food production and serving needs far beyond the traditional restaurants and hotels. There are in fact few of those represented therein. The company's stock in trade seemed to have been the many "secondary" food establishments growing in number in the early twentieth century including soda fountains candy shops tea rooms diners cafeterias educational dining facilities gas stations with food offerings cafes lunch shops beauty parlors fraternity houses and military bases. The types of equipment depicted in the archive represents changes in food production for a population rapidly moving away from traditional home dining and increasingly consuming food in new types of establishments. The rapid economic expansion that made all this change possible came to a halt with the Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. The archive illustrates the experience of a small business in the years leading up to the Crash with issues collecting debts bankruptcy of suppliers and clients etc. The correspondence includes offers of new equipment or supplies often the line between brochure and correspondence is blurred orders inquiries demands for payments complaints requests for new supplier arrangements bankruptcy notices of former customers and more. In addition to the typed and handwritten letters there are postcards and telegrams. A handful of label samples and posters are included as well. Finally there are materials produced by trade periodicals including: Institutional Merchandising Hot Off the Griddle published by Westinghouse American Restaurant Magazine and The Soda Fountain. A wide range of business topics is visible in this archive: bill collection disputes about what was delivered or when disputes about salesmen adding items to an order bankruptcy of a client price changes a UNH fraternity orders a half dozen aluminum pitchers surprised complicated returns of defective merchandise development of school cafeterias the Crash of '29 deliveries abandoned or rejected and more. 1930List328Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.<br /> <br /> The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk’s torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads “Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930â€. Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston’s storied upper class. unknown

The binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. A couple of pages show light pencil writing and notes. The pages show light soiling and light foxing. The title page shows 1851 as the published date. The dark green cloth covers have a gold illustration of a fork on the spine. The covers show general edgewear and light soiling. Text body is clean and free from previous owner annotation underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean neat and free of foxing.
