He was also a musician, amateur ornithologist, conchologist, and botanist. In his preface Hirst states he has purposely avoided reading Keats' Endymion "with the express design of escaping the danger of unintentional plagiarism." He was a friend of Poe, but their friendship broke up over Hirst's insistence that he, and not Poe, was the true author of 'The Raven' AI BX 8
