This the third volume deals mainly with Louisiana rather than the West Indies. It is especially important for its comments on natural history and "La Flore Louisianaise" later translated into English by C. S. Rafinesque and published in New York in 1817. In 1807, C. C. Robin published in French an account of his travels. Rafinesque was a controversial figure and his revision was not entirely satisfactory. He not only translated, but abridged and augmented Robin's flora quite extensively. The result being a systematic catalogue enumerating over 525 species. Rafinesque claimed 30 genera and 196 species as new to science. Plant taxonomists since then have had extreme difficulty in interpreting the status of these so-designated new taxa, because of the often cryptic descriptions Rafinesque provided and the fact that no specimens (or types) that Robin might have obtained are known to exist. 1st Edition. 5 ¼ X 3 ¼ inches. An artists depiction of Temple Sinai in Lake Charles, Louisiana with the caption Jewish Temple. Sometime during the year 1879 when the present city of Lake Charles was a small village of five hundred people, two Jews migrated from Washington, LA. To that village and became the first Jewish residents of this city. Those two were Leopold Kaufman and David Block. With the coming of those two men the Jewish community in Lake Charles came into existence. The congregation of Temple Sinai originated in September, 1894 Temple Sinai was erected in 1904. The onion domes on the original structure were blown off during the storm of 1918. (templesinai. Info) . Jewish Bibliographer Joshua Bloch served there as his first pulpit position, during WW I. This depiction of the temple is from its early days, and depicts the onion domes on the original structure before they were blown off. This is a hardcover copy in a very nice pink dust jacket, that is not price-clipped ($5.00) that is also printed with a woodcut illustration of the fabled "Oak Alley". The book itself is in very good condition, as the light brown cloth covers are very clean and unmarked, even the tipped-on title on pink paper (the same paper as the jacket) looks as fresh as the day it was published. Inside the book there is some offsetting on the printed pink paper paste-down, some foxing to about 10 pages at the beginning and 15 pages or so at the end, otherwise very nice. The dust jacket is almost all there: the back panel is fine, the front panel and spine are present, but there is a small piece missing from the top of the spine which just extends onto the edge of the front panel, not affecting the image or text on the front cover. 10" high X 7 1/2" wide, 162 pages. Text by Natalie Scott. Introduction by N.C.Curtis. About 37 wonderful woodcut illustrations of Louisiana plantation houses by William Spratling, as well as headpiece and tailpiece decorations and other small vignettes for each of the 8 chapters. Index of old houses mentioned or illustrated in the text lists 73 properties. All in all, a beautiful copy in the rare dust jacket. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Noted Louisiana author and historian Grace King King?s final novel was a historical romance titled La Dame de Sainte Hermine (1924), set in eighteenth-century Louisiana. Combining her love and command of historical detail with her novelistic skill, this work embellished the well-known historical phenomenon of the "casket girls," young French women given money and passage to Louisiana by the king in hopes of populating the New World settlement.
