1940204597Ann Arbor: Civil Rights Federation 1940. First edition. Neatly folded twice horizontally; fine. Two-sided broadsheet approx. 8-1/2 X 11 inches printed on both sides. Announcement of the "Open Hearing" held on behalf of thirteen expelled students with a graphic image of a judge on the recto and a length text along with lists of participants and sponsors on the rear. Following a peace rally in April 1940 University President Alexander G. Ruthven fearing fifth-column Communist organizing on campus expelled the students mostly members of the left-wing American Student Union. The case drew national attention at a time when the country was deeply divided over the war in Europe. At this culminating event in November a range of speakers including representatives of the Civil Rights Federation labor unions professors and activists denounced Ruthven and defended the students' first amendment rights. In the end however the students remained expelled and a year later the U.S. was in the war. Civil Rights Federation unknown

The reverse side is an attractive color lithograph of a hunter with knife held overhead charging a snarling bear which is standing over the hunters fallen companion. Three dogs attacking the bear add to the action. "Compliments of Rough Bros. Wagon Works. Buchanan Mich." appears in small type at upper right corner. An insignificant minor blemish on printed side not affecting text else a fine example of a "turn-of-the-century" business card with an unusually attractive color lithograph. Privately printed, n.d. Inked name of original owner appears on title page "Mrs. Josephine Kiefer " whose husband a physician is one of the "makers" in the book . Includes 30 full-page portraits of which 15 are handsome steel engravings protected by intact tissue guards. Gen. George Armstrong Custer appears in the book but without a portrait. 4to. 544 pp. Including index plus several blank pages to fill in with additional obituaries.
