Catto's fifth novel under the "Simon Kent" pseudonym although the jacket blurb would have you believe it was only the third a tale about "an American hobo who unwanted by everybody except the police seems doomed to sail forever on the Fat Annie a ferry-boat plying between Hongkong and Macao until swiftly and dramatically outside events intervene." This was the basis for the 1959 British film FERRY TO HONG KONG starring Curd aka Curt Jurgens and Orson Welles although with two odd caveats: a the on-screen credits read "based on the novel by Max Catto"; and b the fact that it was based on any novel at all goes unmentioned by the standard online reference sources I have not checked all available printed references which only mention a screenplay by Lewis Gilbert who also directed the film and Vernon Harris. You want more oddness: while the names of the primary characters have been changed the names of many of the secondary characters are carried over from the novel as is the name of the ferry-boat itself. .
