Limited to 25 copies only finely printed by Didot on Annonay paper and handsomely bound in contemporary polished calf by Derome; this is one of the rarest and oddest of all private library catalogues. It is also notable as the first bibliography or catalogue with a limitation statement and very probably the first catalogue to mention binders' names. Mérard 1749-1812 man of letters was born into a family of great wealth and for a number of years was in charge of the residence of the future Louis XVIII. After retiring from his public duties in 1782 he concentrated on his growing collection of books and on commissioning editions printed in severely limited numbers. Guigard wrote Vol. II p. 351: "Sans l'amour des livres Mérard de Saint-Just serait complètement oublié." There is much truth in this but the catalogue is a fascinating and rare document which keeps Mérard's name alive in the world of bibliophily. The catalogue is an odd combination of books which were present in his library books no longer in his library and books which he desired for his library including some books which could be imaginary; see below. His collection was not large but fine. Mérard did not have the taste for editio princeps except for Aldines but preferred the best editions with careful editing. The catalogue describes 513 items each with details regarding binding and prices paid. In the Preface which alone would justify reprinting for his extraordinary views on book collectors and in his concluding remarks on pp. 161-163 he sets out his main interests foremost among them fine bindings listing eight binders whose works he had acquired or himself commissioned: Padeloup Laferté Derome le Jeune Chamean Chaumont Roger Payne and Baumgarten. He enumerates sixteen sales at which he acquired books including those of the Pompadour Boze Gaignat Gouttard Mac Carthy Reagh and 'Mylord Keri' i.e. Ker Duke of Roxburghe collections. His catalogue is the first in which the binders of the books whenever known are mentioned. Mérard has been accused of including in his catalogue the description of books which never existed or which he never owned but Escoffier convincingly defends him against that charge though Barbier shows that six of his own works described as printed editions were in fact in MS. Mérard suffered two major losses from his library which he recounts in this catalogue. During an absence the pipes in the kitchen leaked causing serious water damage to the library room below irreparably destroying 200 of his most precious books. Then on the 12th of December 1782 the English navy seized a French boat which was carrying 1000 books of Mérard's - considered by Guigard to be the cream of his collection - which he had sent to a friend in America why he had sent them he never explained. These volumes were never recovered. A very fine copy. This copy has the five extra pages at end often missing which contain a description of one of the books in the catalogue the Des Pierres Précieuses of Dutens. This was the first book printed by Didot l'ainé. Unidentified armorial book label on inside front cover: with coat-of-arms monogrammed with initials "C.R.L." or "R.L.C." and motto "Vita sine litteris mors est." Bookplate of A.R.A. Among them are three reproductions of Milton portraits including Milton as an infant as a boy and the famous Romney painting of the blind Milton dictating to his daughters this plate being the folding one. To our knowledge this copy of the Boydell Milton is an uniquely hand-colored copy. All the plates other than the Milton portraits are the artwork of Westall. These have an unmistakable affinity to the heroic style of Blake his contemporary. The men and even the women can have exaggerated bulging muscles as found most famously in Michelangelo. As invited by Milton's epic light contends with dark and the illustrations serve up a phantasmagoria of imagery with swirling shadows and specters. The hand-coloring is of a very high caliber and we think greatly enriches the mezzotints. The three volumes contain all the major poetry of Milton -- "Paradise Lost" "Paradise Regained" "Samson Agonistes" "Comus" etc. etc. Note all half-titles are present. Binding of a rich russet/crimson straight-grained morocco with bands of blindstamping and gilt-stamping decoration on the boards and gilt decoration within and on the raised bands. Decoration consists of ruling Greek palmettos and more floral rinceaux bands. Conditiion: morocco binding with minor abrasions and wear. One leaf with repaired tear Vol. II pp. 103/4. Archive of original scripts for all 27 episodes of "The George Carlin Show" which ran on Fox for two seasons in 1994 and 1995 with multiple drafts of each episode totaling 196 scripts. Also included are several key pieces of ephemera relating to the development and writing of the show. Altogether a thoroughly comprehensive and researchable archive detailing a writing process that attempted to digest and reconstruct the persona of one of the most iconoclastic and influential not to mention foul mouthed standup comics for mainstream viewing. From the estate of series co-creator Sam Simon. <br/><br/>One of the most important and influential television producers and directors of the last 30 years Sam Simon is best known along with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks as the co-creators of "The Simpsons." Simon won a remarkable nine Emmy Awards seven for "The Simpsons" and two for "The Tracy Ullman Show" and was nominated another ten times for his work on both those shows as well as his contributions to "Cheers" "Taxi" and "The Gary Shandling Show." <br/><br/>Created by Simon and George Carlin "The George Carlin Show" ran for two seasons on Fox from 1994 to 1995. Carlin played New York cabbie George O'Grady who when not haranguing fares spent most of his time at a bar modeled on Carlin's real life Morningside Heights haunt haranguing his fellow patrons which characteristically of the post-"Seinfeld" boom in sitcoms created around standup comics allowed the writers to incorporate elements of Carlin's stage routines into the show. In his posthumously published autobiography "Last Words" Carlin said of the show "I had a great time. I never laughed so much so often so hard as I did with the cast members" but did not get along with co-creator Simon a view Simon attributed in an interview to the show's "cancellation affecting George's attitude towards the work in retrospect" and he considered the show "a very special period of my life."<br/><br/>The majority of scripts are housed in 27 generic black ring binders with one binder per episode each containing between three and nine scripts. Staunford illustrated his meaning by showing how the Title "Brief" might be treated. Theloall chose this title and wrote a treatise on it for his own use. The manuscript having been lent eventually found its way to a printer. "It deserved to be printed as it is the most orderly treatise on procedure founded on the Year Books that had yet appeared. Rojas 1777-1827 librarian of the royal botanical garden of Madrid describes the grapes' characteristics tastes and uses as a commercial crop for eating and for making wine. He describes more than 120 varieties providing details on their various local names qualities and areas of cultivation. Chapter Four discusses earlier writers on viticulture including Cato Pliny Isidor of Seville Crescenzio Liger Béguillet Rozier and others. Fine copy. Dicc. Porrúa notes that his birth and death dates are unknown but he is known to have taught self defense by 1787. Of engraver Manuel Aráoz Mathes comments: "Manuel Aráoz instructor in engraving produced thirteen excellent plates of fencing and fighting maneuvers using the saber for Simón de FrÃas Tratado elemental de la destreza del sable Imprenta de Arizpe. The artist who signs his name P. Patiño or P.P. may be sculptor and artist Pedro Patiño Ixtolinque." The earliest book on any form of fencing published in Mexico the work is a thorough guide to the formal sport of fencing with sabers complete with accurate detailed illustrations. The above two-part work contains reports on surgical cases handled at the Rostock Hospital where Simon was professor of surgery over the five-year period between 1861 and 1865. The first part titled "Summarische Berichte . . . Chirurgische Mittheilungen mit Beschreibung interessanterer Krankheitsfälle" contains among other things Simon's report of the cure by incision and double puncture of two large abdominal tumors caused by the parasite Echinococcus. The second part devoted to plastic surgery contains reports on plastic operations of the mouth vagina and rectum including the lip operation cited above and an account of plastic operations on the vaginal wall between the rectum and genital canal. First edition; this is according to Grove one of the two best early comic operas by Favart 1710-92 the most prominent member of a French family of dramatists singers and actors active in musical theater. Favart was a librettist playwright and impresario. This copy was presented to the Académie Française and bears the following inscription on a free front-endpaper: "Pigansé de la part de l'auteur a l'Academie le Lundi huitième May 1741." On the following three pages is a 34-line manuscript poem entitled "A Messieurs de l'Académie françoise sic" which wittily describes the journey of Favart and the advice given to him by a prose writer a poet and a wise author. 20681 p.l. 140 pp. 8vo attractive antique half-calf & boards. Paris: Mauger & Hubert An VII 1799. The very rare sale catalogue of duplicates from the library of Mérard 1749-1812 man of letters. He was born into a very rich family and for a number of years was in charge of the residence of the future Louis XIII. After retiring from his public duties in 1782 he concentrated on his growing collection of books and commissioned editions printed in severely limited numbers. Guigard wrote Vol. II p. 351: "San l'amour des livres Mérard de Saint-Just serait complètement oublié." In 1783 he issued a famous catalogue limited to 25 copies. The catalogue is an odd combination of books which were present in his library books no longer in his library and books which he desired for his library including some completely imaginary books. His collection was not large but fine. Mérard did not have the taste for editio princeps except for Aldines but preferred the best editions with careful editing. He bought books from many of the great collections of the 18th century - Pompadour de Boze Gaignat Randon de Boisset Mac-Carthy Reagh Gouttard etc. - and selected choicely bound volumes including examples by Padeloup Derôme Roger Payne and Baumgarten. 1079 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Attributed to Lille printer Simon-François Blocquel. A guide for children in two sections. The first entitled "Savant de huit ans: sciences arts et métiers;" the second entitled "Petit coloriste: de enluminure." Describes the printing trades. With six color plates entitled Peintre frontispiece Sculpture Graveur en taille-douce Relieur Imprimeur en caractères mobiles. Also with color title. Numerous black and white illustrations include the human anatomy and musical scores. Simon-François Blocquel 1780-1863 was a Lille printer and bookseller. Born in Douai he was orphaned and was raised by his aunt who was married to a printer and bookseller of Lille. He became an apprentice in his uncle's printing trade. He worked in association with Lille bookseller Jean-Baptiste Castiaux from 1809 to circa 1835. Blocquel published a number of works related to geography and foreign cultures see Roger J.D. Collins "Simon Blacquel Imagier et Éditeur Lillois" in the Journal de la Société des Océanistes 41 1985. He was active in the Lille business community and he also served on the municipal council of that city from 1820 to 1857. Covers rubbed and scuffed at edges worn at extremities of spine.
