Marsh's collection of topical homilies had its inception in 1853, when she went among the large contingent of railway navvies assembled in Beckenham and environs to rebuild the Crystal Place at Sydenham following the Great Exhibition of 1851. A number of the later pieces refer to the Crimean War and other contemporary events. Chalmers was sometime Rector of Beckenham. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
