A delicate little pamphlet 5 1/4 x 5 1/16 inches with a fragile string-tied binding. Wrappers are soiled and chipped; some minor tearing to pages at binding but booklet remains intact; first leaf sticking at binding. Half inch triangular chip missing from back wrapper. Toning and soiling inside. What at first glance seems to be a typical child's ABC book is in reality a land promotional piece for the Chicago & North-Western Railway. "R is for Railroad train with equipment the best; Which on the North -Western Will take you out West." Includes a small inset map of the Chicago North-Western Railway and 8 pages of text extolling the virtues of the million acres of land the railway owns ready to sell in southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota. An alphabet book in rhyme that includes text describing the benefits of moving to Dakota Minnesota and other places served by the Chicago and North Western Railway Company. 4 copies found on OCLC which lists the date as 1889. A promotional work for the railroad this pamphlet is subtitled "A few testimonies of the results obtained from farming in this wonderful region." The text is comprised of letters written by real residents in this "Wonderland of the Northwest" noting bountiful crop yields and cheap land. This railroad seems to been relatively short running from the Connecticut border south of Longmeadow Massachusetts to East Hartford. At the final 1887 meetings of the stockholders and directors recorded in this minute book the Company appeared to be facing a foreclosure suit by the Connecticut State Treasurer. The United States assumed custodial power over Cuba under the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. Cuba gained formal independence in 1902 as the Republic of Cuba but the U.S. continued to keep troops in Cuba and retained the right to intervene in its internal and foreign affairs. During this period which lasted to 1908 with later incursions the U.S. military supervised the development of the local military and implemented several public-works projects such as a modern railroad system. A promotional brochure with brief descriptions of scenic points of interest and tourist attractions along the rail line of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway issued after the completion of its Denver-Salt Lake City main line west from Salida Colorado via Marshall Pass and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. "The railroad started as a 3 ft 914 mm narrow-gauge line running south from Denver Colorado in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City Utah . The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading with a motto of 'Through the Rockies not around them' and later 'Main line through the Rockies' both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States over the 10240 feet 3120 m Tennessee Pass in Colorado and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. At its height in the mid-1880s the D&RGW had the largest narrow-gauge railroad network in North America with 2783 miles 4479 km of track interconnecting the states of Colorado New Mexico and Utah" Wikipedia.
